EA – Chapter 80

Essentia Animus

Dear Readers,

Thank you for reading our tale to the very end.  After all of Sryine’s prompting, I felt like it would be my responsibility to ensure there was an accurate record of everything we had gone through to bring our world forward into the future.  If we were going to open the path to the stars, there would need to be records left behind, both in the world we were moving away from and to wherever our future would pave us towards.  I expect a record like this could then travel an unforeseen distance too, far greater than I could imagine right now.. there is no telling where this story could end up, maybe even beyond the reach of the veil?  I guess that might be impossible, but really the future is so uncertain right now, it’s hard to be so confident in any predictions.  Leaving Celese behind, there is no telling what there is to find once we travel beyond.

Technically, at this point, we’ve actually been a bit beyond, travelling so far as the moon and back again successfully.  It had taken us three years of work after losing Liyuzhe, but we finally made it.  Since then, we’ve made even more progress, everything is almost ready for us to go, we’re only about a lunar cycle or two away from being ready to leave the world for good.  For having only five years of memories, the anniversary of the fifth year having just passed today actually, that’s probably pretty impressive, but I really can’t assume all of the credit for such work.  Without the help of all my friends, those closest to me, those who took us in when we were barely able to take care of ourselves, and those who are now lost to us.. without everyone, such a vision would remain simply a fleeting dream instead of a reality.  It is true, all of life is truly precious.

Sryine has been the one bugging me the whole time, pushing me to keep making such records, and yet she still slips up on occasion with her typical witty remarks.  Something about such a story of essences being essential, about how our strong destructive feelings were held in animus while animating our otherwise fallen selves.  Maybe that was where she had gotten the idea for such a name, Essentia Animus, though I haven’t the faintest where she might have gotten the idea from.  If I had to guess, I would have to assume she had probably been inspired by those books she reads from the Terran Mythos or something.  In truth, having finished records of everything, it isn’t hard to see this as being yet another tale to add to the mythos, the whole thing rightfully seeming unbelievable for anyone who might not have lived it for themselves.

It hasn’t been as if the time has passed with all of our attention invested in reaching the stars, everything has actually remained busy in other ways as well.  Sryine herself had needed to spend a lot of time away as things stood, and not just making a business case for all of our accomplishments.  Having successfully started a family of her own though, we did at least learn that our traces of the flame will end with our lives, the flame not being passed down to any descendents.  That would be for the best, it would be much better for people to live regular lives untainted by the source.  Even without a flame, it was all too obvious that Sryine’s son will still grow up capable of accomplishing whatever dreams he might someday face.  I also expect Sryine won’t be alone in her parental responsibilities for too much longer, Vwyx’s own wedding having recently gone very well.  Vwyx’s descendents would certainly also carry on that family legacy too, even if such a child didn’t share the family appreciation for instruments.

Instrumentation had changed immensely in such a short time too, because of our efforts.  Instead of having a ton of gift-powered instruments causing problems for people, things were now running off of the elements instead.  The easiest element to harness for such a purpose still remained fire, its flame fully capable of being harnessed to shape and control the other elements.  From table lamps to community trains, everything now appeared to be manipulated using an elemental converter crystal.  The cell I’ve got now is even flame-powered too, no longer then depending on having any focus invested upon it, a fact Vwyx’s husband has been countlessly thankful for.

Such was not the only place Vwyx had invested her attention when it came to cell innovation.  Schorlwood Village itself was now part of the same communication network, all in a massive project to advance the village into the modern age.  The rough winter the village was left with, the serious amount of help they needed to deal with the massive risk of starvation, it was enough to make them realize that change was needed.  Sryine’s brother had been at the forefront of that change, himself finally getting the mantle of leadership passed down to him, though it has been Vwyx’s sister who had become the village’s lead expert in the adoption of instrumentation into their lives.  Really, I can so totally see the impacts left upon those two from their siblings.

Vwyx actually hadn’t stopped there either.  With my time so completely devoted towards research, both in star travel and in elemental manipulation in place of the gift, I actually was left with little opportunity to devote towards the hunters.  To compensate for my absence, Vwyx actually took over full authority over the hunters, becoming a true member of their group too in the process.  However, she had been so efficient in her work, she had actually ran them out of a purpose.  It only took two or three years for her to completely obliterate any remaining beast presence, and normal wildlife had since taken their place in the mountains.  I really expect it was a long term exposure to residues of the flame that had changed the original wildlife into such beasts, but such knowledge was then enough to ensure the fire mountain would be watched, to ensure no more mistakes in the future.

I had really honestly expected at first that I would be travelling the stars on my own, because bringing people into such an unknown would be too much for anyone who didn’t share such a vision, but I guess it hasn’t just been Vwyx and Sryine who have left their impact on others.  Even with the idea of starting a new family, both girls were saying that it would be important to bring life along with me, to discover a new expansion for society, and there was no way I could do that without them.  Thus, they would come too.  Not just them, but all of the hunters decided that this was just the next expansion of their responsibilities, they would simply become hunters for a new world.  It didn’t just end there, the simple inspiration and idea of reaching out beyond, of being a part of this change, attracted the attention of thousands, millions.  I actually had to consider evaluating who I couldn’t bring with me, instead of who I might be able to go with.

The growing demand for a place to contain a growing population brought a challenge of its own, our current idea being far too low capacity for such requirements.  In the end, we actually had to start remodelling the fortress itself into a giant space colony, the only thing on hand that was large enough to contain such a massive sample of civilization.  Both Sryine and Vwyx really didn’t like this idea, but when left with the only alternative of not coming along.. such concerns became a bit more fleeting in comparison.  I had actually found the storage capacity of the place to be amazing, enough to hold a small city comfortably enough.. even if the layout remained perplexing.  There were even a lot of oddly portioned storage containers through many of the halls that were perfect for storing ersatz into.. like they were designed to hold something inanimate but shaped like a person.  The whole thing was so self-contained, I couldn’t think of anything more perfect, and it was something Liyuzhe had left for us.

Liyuzhe and the others.. we had managed to arrange for a funeral for all three of them.. even if it had taken a while to get everything organized.  We had even taken the time to track down the family of both Ieqyisa and Fhyernx, though Liyuzhe herself had nothing at all.  It was strange, having no records of Liyuzhe’s family show up like that.  Liyuzhe had always been a bit of a rogue, but it was suspicious that she still had nothing at all.  Since there wasn’t anyone else there for her, I made sure to represent her myself at the funeral.. somehow that just felt right.  Friends count as family, right?  All three of them got some of the credit for our discovery in processing elements for instrumentation, it was their motivation that made everything happen, after all.  Besides, having failed to save the three of them, I owed them at least the accomplishments of their greatest dream.

But on the matter of not knowing family, I also realized that the flaws of my memories would also mean not knowing some of my own heritage.  Sure, Khyzae is only a part of myself, but that still counts, and it’s not like I could research it later.  I found a family book covering the whole family tree thing, though I was drawn somehow to a certain strange blank section of the tree, starting about three generations prior.  It was like someone just forgot to fill in the details there, like things had been lost to time.  The strangest part was when I just felt naturally compelled to write in a crescent moon into that blank, like it was something important for future generations to find.  Such strange compulsions were actually weird, I could only hope I didn’t subconsciously fill in anything similar into the records of our accomplishments too.  It was like I was keeping secrets from even myself or something.. definitely not something that would be beyond me.  Khyzae had always been like that, and even if she was still alive within me.. or had left me to carry on without her.. that was still one thing that would always remain a part of me.

On that note, Khyzae was always someone who made sure to plan for the future, so I should be certain to note some of my own ideas in that area.  Celese is in for another dramatic shift, with new options available thanks to such new discoveries.. but all of that is stuff I’ll be leaving behind.  Making use of the flame I’ve still carried within me, my body still even glowing purple from the flame those many years ago, our voyage to the stars will be with sufficient supplies to bring life to such a distant horizon.  Vwyx has made sure I don’t underestimate the journey though, the cold of space and everything.  Certainly, she’s demonstrated the potential of the frost well enough, I’m not going to doubt the threat possible from its chill.  Even accounting for such, the flame we bring will certainly last until we can arrive at our destination, even if it is going to be a star cluster or two away.  That’s going to make for a really really long journey, one that might not even end within my lifetime, but I’ll still bring with me all the fuel we will need to forge even life in desolation.  We’ve always been told that our flame was destined to destroy worlds, but I’ve always been certain that this feature was reversible.  Rather than bring destruction to a world with life, I dream of the opportunity to bring life to a world of destruction.  Really, with my friends at my side, I even think such a thing is all too possible.

EA – Chapter 79

Harmonious Resolution

Even with the arrival of the morning sun, Sryine and Vwyx were left with Riyxia’s sleeping body, waiting.  Riyxia’s spectre had yet to return, and the two of them were starting to worry.

What had not helped at all was the feeling of Riyxia’s body growing far too cold, like the sleep she was currently enduring was a state in fact far worse than simple slumber.  Being deprived of a heat such as the flame, of course her body would get colder.. but this still seemed to be worse than even a normal person.  It was Sryine who was the first to figure it out, that the distance of the spectre.. of the essence.. would leave the body in a state that the essence could no longer influence.  A person devoid of their body was then in a state of death.  Sryine had started to panic at the idea, but Vwyx wasn’t just going to give up, even knowing that.  Riyxia’s spectre had demonstrated its ability to defy death already before, Vwyx was certain that even a brush with death wasn’t going to be enough to stop Riyxia.  However, that would in turn leave her body as a lifeless husk that would need to be somehow still kept ready for the return of her essence.  Vwyx applied her own gift to ensure the body left to them kept going, artificially tending to her body by effectively constantly crafting it into normal operation.  It’s blood needed to circulate, to remain fresh, while its lungs had to move.. to keep air circulating.  The ingredients for life were the harmony of the elements.

Watching Vwyx work with such determination, the most challenging craft ever presented to her set before her, Sryine couldn’t help but be motivated to lend a hand.  Vwyx had the material elements in her control, she was the best at making use of the energy elements.  Tending Riyxia with consideration for the quality of air, the quality of water.. and especially the quality of flame.  Riyxia was growing cold, but warmth was one thing the flame was really good at.  Sryine however was surprised, even before she could find a way to slice her arm again for another good sample of the flame to work with, Vwyx was instead holding out her own, already cut and bleeding by a blade of her own crafting.  The blood dripped from Vwyx, a known offering for Sryine to work with, it didn’t even resist her gift in the process.  Sryine smiled wryly, having been too slow this time to act.  Then again, she had done this plenty of times already, Vwyx was simply taking her own turn this time, making use of her own ability to resist pain productively.  Sryine made use of such an offering, applying it with the flame from the fragment she still carried, sowing warmth into the otherwise lifeless husk.  Exactly as Riyxia had expected, her body was being tended by her closest of friends, successfully keeping it in a state prepared to return to life once again.

However, simulating the process of life demanded everything either girl had, a fact which denied them the attention to notice the flow of shimmers from the tiny exit of the vent.  The vent itself had gone quiet and still once again as well, at peace and relaxed.  Neither girl even noticed the water become slightly brighter, the wash of purple already being obscured by the purple glow they were already emitting.  What caught their attention was the realization that tending to Riyxia’s fallen form was becoming suddenly easier and easier, improving by itself within the span of moments.  Still not completely understanding, both girls were suddenly surprised when Riyxia herself started coughing, her own will taking command over her body once again.  Riyxia however was still trying to take accounts of what had even happened, the lack of her thoughts and memory making everything sort of obscure.  Her mind felt like a haze too, Sryine not even having realized that her actions had been attempting to sustain Riyxia’s mind in the process, an inspiration of processing caused by subtle illusions.  This left Riyxia feeling like she had suddenly woken up from a dream, which was also an experience she had no memory of ever having.. making it really hard to understand.  The thoughts of such vague illusions remained fleeting for her, she couldn’t recall any of the details at all, but they did still serve to cloud her thoughts further.

Looking around, Riyxia recognized the terms of her location.  This was just outside the vent below the lake, Sryine having sustained their air supply the entire time in addition to everything else that had been going on.  She then recalled why they were here, because Liyuzhe had descended into the vent.. and things had gone really wrong.  She then remembered going after them.. but her memories ended with that.  Had she succeeded, was everything fine?  Her mind was filled with unanswered questions.. and yet she felt relaxed.  In fact, she felt as if everything was done, all without records within her memory.  She took a deep breath, closing her eyes, searching herself for answers her mind had no record of.  From that came a subtle certainty of resolve, feelings that tried to answer beyond the logical scape of the mind.  Things.. really were done, the threat was gone.  The great flame from beyond had been exiled once again, though the remnants of it had been collected by.. herself?  She looked down at herself once again, her body glowing with a purple like it had before.. but this flame was way beyond what she had contained before.  This was no Celesi flame, this was embers from the source itself, a flame of incredible intensity.  Her glow was less than either of the others, but the strength of her flame had exceeded well beyond what either would be capable of.  This sort of flame would not simply be used up and vanish over days.. it instead might take her entire lifetime.

Riyxia’s next thoughts turned to Liyuzhe and the others, people she understood to be friends still even beyond their misunderstandings.  At that consideration, a tear blazed down her cheeks, a feeling of failure filled her.  She might have saved the world, but she wasn’t able to save those three too.  It might have been irrational to expect everything, but she was really hoping that there wouldn’t have been more deaths to the flame she could feel responsible for.  First the flame had killed three girls, not even that far from here about half a year ago.. and now the flame had struck again to take another three dreamers who were only trying to make their dreams come true.  Riyxia had been imparted Khyzae’s dream, simply by being passed on portions of Khyzae’s nature.. but now it seemed she would be the successor of another dream as well.  Liyuzhe had died trying to make her dream happen, foolishly died.. but still died.  The ways Liyuzhe had tried to make her dream come true were wrong, but that wasn’t to say that the dream itself wasn’t valid.  The gift had its limits, its boundaries, and she for one was seeing that the future could only be found by shattering the boundaries before them.  Unlike those whose lives were lost before her, before all three of them.. she needed to find a way to make this happen.  For the sake of the original essences within their bodies, for the sake of the three friends her original essence had lost in the process, she needed to make a change, to make dreams happen.

“Thank you both for your hard work and support, I knew I could count on you both to help make everything happen.  Even so, there are still things that need to be done, so maybe we should actually get out of this stupid lake.  Sryine’s wind here has been plenty of help, but normal air would probably make everything way easier.”  “Riyxia!  You had us so worried, you know that, right?  Please don’t ever do that again, ever!  Anyway, I can get us out of here, but where are we going next?  Where did Ieqyisa go too, actually?”  “The three of them.. didn’t make it.  All three of them have been taken by the source before the gate could be closed.”  “Oh…  That sucks, actually.  I mean, they had been a pain for a while, but I still don’t think they deserved such a thing.  Being determined and all was a good thing, even their ambitions were actually really impressive.. their only real problem was being blind to something they didn’t want to understand.  Ieqyisa worked so hard to improve herself, made her gift go miles simply by her own determination.  My gift has grown to something absolutely insane, but most of it was simply a strength just given to me.  I still remember how much I had tried to make my illusions into something cool, I can totally understand her trying to strive for her own better future.”  Riyxia understood that the deaths here didn’t just impact her, Sryine was making that all too clear.  Ieqyisa had spent a lot of time with Sryine.. and if things with Jwyexzn worked out, Ieqyisa would actually become a sort of late sister for Sryine too.  Sryine would have to pick things up for Ieqyisa, look after Ieqyisa’s brother in the process as well.

Vwyx was so obviously silently reflecting something similar.  Fhyernx was a guy she had known for a long time, the guy who handled the trade her family needed to survive.  Sure, that deal had fallen flat.. but with his death, the deal’s end was actually even more inevitable.  Fhyernx was even the one who gave her some of her earliest introductions into instrumentation, something that had since become a vital part of her lifestyle.. something that apparently was also ingrained in his own.  Knowing he had simply died.. it was a harsh thing to consider, even after some of the ways he had started treating her in the end.  It wasn’t as if she had been treating him much better either, not while their goals conflicted.

With such deaths, the three girls were filled with feelings of sadness and regrets as they left the lake with the most direct path out, straight up.  Left upon a surface of the water, Sryine obviously getting tired of having them float on air, Vwyx started crafting a sheet of ice for them to walk upon instead, going from one struggle to another.  Riyxia slipped and fell all too immediately, the ice being too much for her to handle.  Vwyx and Sryine were both at her side right away, helping her up together, Vwyx having a wry smile at Riyxia’s fall.  Of course, Riyxia understood she couldn’t underestimate the cold, the stuff was about as annoying as water was, actually.  In fact, she could definitely see such frost bringing even more possible problems in the future, a concern she really didn’t want to even consider.

Slowly adjusting to the ice, the three made their way back to the lakeside, finding themselves at the beach once again.  By impulse, Riyxia walked towards the fallen fortress, still left abandoned there.  Everything of Liyuzhe’s was effectively abandoned at this point, she was gone.  It was a shame too, so much of Liyuzhe’s equipment was top-notch quality, things that could be really useful to work with in the future.  In fact, if she was going to consider making Liyuzhe’s dream come true, she would have to make use of what Liyuzhe had in the process that was actually useful.  The whole beast thing, not useful, and obviously the ambitions for controlling the flame were absolutely futile.  But there were a lot of other resources Liyuzhe’s trio had available to them, stuff she would need to repurpose for her own plans.  Oh, of course, Khyzae had actually been the fourth of their group too, so in a way this progression of resources felt almost.. planned before her.  Khyzae really wasn’t gone, she had been an influence through the entire journey, and would remain a part of Riyxia for the rest of her life.

“Lets go check out that fortress, we might as well figure out what uses we can find for it.  Can’t just let things go to waste, right?  .. especially her dream.”  “Wait, you want to go back inside that.. that.. horror?  You do know that place is haunted, right?”  “You mean, like with ghosts?  Silly Sryine, that just makes the place feel even more like home for us living dead, you know that?  Think about it, I’m practically a ghost myself, after all.  But on that matter, I seem to remember the place being filled with a lot of other walking dead that I’m supposed to keep as my own companions, and father would be outright distraught if I didn’t come back with at least a few of them.  There was even one of them I had really felt comfortable with, a certain black haired ersatz that had seemed as if it was such a great second home for my spectre.  Except for her hair, I was noticing just how similar she was to the doll Vwyx had made.. which was what had originally caught my eye.  You two still need healing too, we really can’t just return to the village with you two looking so horribly injured.. don’t you know how many people that would worry?  Instead, we should just rest here for a while, try to get both of you healed the entire way, maybe even come up with some plans for the future.”  Riyxia led the way towards the fortress, despite Sryine’s continued protests.  Vwyx didn’t even bother wasting the effort, simply bracing herself for the terror they were going to throw themselves into once again.  Vwyx found it at least comforting that even the terror-resistant Sryine found such a place scary, that itself proved to validate her own fears as someone without such protection.

Riyxia quickly located the ersatz she was considering, the same one with the crescent hairpin that now held black hair.  Vwyx noticed that it was also in need of some repairs.. and it would probably not be the only one that needed repairs.  A thousand ersatz, each with various degrees of significant damage.. she was going to be busy for a while, wasn’t she?  Because Vwyx was putting in so much effort, Riyxia decided to first try to ensure Vwyx was healed, while Sryine just relaxed in a place of her choosing.  Sryine in turn noticed that the water cooling system had stopped, the water was completely drained from the otherwise cool room.  In a corner of the room, she even found a blossom, looking much like the one she had lost before.

Sryine toyed with it as she had earlier.. but the thing was completely unresponsive, fluttering nowhere at all.  Well, if it had no direction, she would provide it with one, carrying it up the ladder and setting it free through the halls, carried upon the direction of her own wind.  She didn’t need such a silly thing to tell her where she was going next, she already knew.  They were heading for the stars, nothing else left in their way, it was only a matter of time now.  Using void crystals of their own making, they could achieve a purity that would dramatically improve the performance of their gift, a world-shifting potential that even the boundaries of the world wouldn’t be able to stop.  Sure, there were concerns about what would happen once they were beyond the reach of the world providing them with such a gift.. but it wasn’t as if the elements they put in motion would just stop, all of those elements already existed anyway.

Sryine froze, a moment of revelation passing over her.  The gift came from somewhere.. sure, everyone understood it as the gift came from the world, but even the world had to get such influence from something.  The elements that brought life to the world also remain its source of power, and such elements are the composition of all creation.  They had always been working to simply harness the elements with the aid of the world, but if they instead bypassed that process and found ways to directly shape the elements on their own, they would effectively create a gift for themselves.  In fact, there wasn’t anyone more qualified to do such a thing then the three of them, their individual gifts forming the complete harmony over the elements to shape such a process.. and the presence of their flame being a submersion of elemental aptitude ever eager to begin taking full control over the elements within its own reach.  This was something she would have to simply discuss with Riyxia later, to devise a plan to enable a way for them.. actually possibly everyone.. to bypass the restrictions of their gifts and instead take control over the elements around them directly.

Flame appeared to be the most useful element in this process, being the greatest controlling authority over all of the other elements.. maybe Vwyx could then make instruments that focused upon the elements to draw strength from them directly.. rather than a person’s gift.  This was remarkable, not only did this mean that the path to the stars was opening for them.. but Liyuzhe’s dream would come true too.  Sryine just hoped that Ieqyisa didn’t mind that she herself would be taking over such a research and distribution project, she could just see the profits available from such a world-changing innovation.  She would need Riyxia’s guidance and Vwyx’s potential with instrumentation.. that was simply obvious, they were a team after all.  She giggled softly from the platform she was relaxing upon, imagining exactly what kind of career boost this sort of news would provide for Jwyexzn.  This was seriously going to be awesome.

Sryine reflected too, there would be more need for records of what was going on than simply news reports.  She had always enjoyed tales of legends that shaped the world, but now she was going to be a part of one herself.  Actually, in all consideration, their whole journey had been something that could itself become legend, to add to the incredible collection of stories from the Terran Mythos.  Sure, her tale was actually real.. but she did recall what Jwyexzn had said, that history tends to shape legends based upon what is interesting more than what is accurate, her tale might be altered in just the same way.  That was fine, let the future write their story in whatever way it needs to find its own inspiration.. such tales had empowered her to get this far, after all.

They would simply need to compile all of the facts, to make accurate records of what had transpired, and depend upon the future to see the facts in whatever fiction that was left to them.  Jwyexzn would be really good at this too, he was a professional in this very field.  In fact, many of their friends could help with each of their own contributions too.  However, of everyone she could trust to provide complete insight into an understanding of the facts that had occured, she could think of no better person to turn to than Riyxia herself, the woman who had a natural talent for simply remaining aware of her situation and accounting for.. everything.. when planning for the future.  More than even Jwyexzn, if she wanted an accurate record to leave for the future, she would need Riyxia’s help.  It was actually ironic, in its own way, the woman with the least memories of her past would in turn be the one with the best memories to work with.  This was a really good thing, the three of them had gone through a lot of struggles, dealt with so many different things, and all things considered, it might not be good if all of the details their lives had left would instead suddenly go to waste.

Hearing an account of all this, Riyxia was left to agree with the entire assessment, all things she would still need to devote her attention towards.  Having at least finished what they needed in the fortress, the three girls stepped back outside to witness the midday sun burning brightly at the peak of yet another busy day.

EA – Chapter 78

Astral Flame

After everything the girls had gone through, it was actually surprising for Sryine and Vwyx to suddenly confront the lake again so easily.  After all the struggles they had endured, it felt like it would take quite a lot to simply get back there.

Sryine still felt like she had only blinked, which was strange considering how much her acceleration could achieve while others blinked.  One moment they were in the halls of the fortress, the realization that they would be walking through it lost once again beset upon her.. and the next they were stepping back upon the sand of the beach.  One quick blow, Riyxia had punctured straight through the wall, breaking a way out of the fortress.  Vwyx had figured out at least what had happened, apparently there was a problem with pressure containment, a very careful and mighty blow could rupture the entire wall and blow a massive hole in it.  This would have been seriously dangerous to attempt had the wall not led directly outside, leaving Vwyx worried about Riyxia’s confidence in such actions.  Vwyx had found she didn’t even know where the map she had carried had vanished off to, worried that the phantoms of the fortress had simply taken it back.  The place was so totally and obviously haunted, after all.

At the lakeside, the three girls took an opportunity to put together the sorts of things they would require.  Vwyx and Sryine worked together to get a collection of small spheres made from ice, things that would be expected to carry her flame.  Vwyx expected that the spheres would not last long once exposed, so they should save such a resource for once they got inside.  Riyxia at least tested one, and found a way she could actually possess the infuriating little thing.  Through such she also learned that possessing ice was not at all comfortable, the frost itself even felt so very draining.  While Sryine was working with the winds to provide them some measure of a shared transport, Riyxia tried to apply her own gift again to at least make some improvements of the health for her friends.  The vent was rough, any slight advantage would be important.  It was for this reason too that Riyxia found her own injuries repaired, even if she didn’t have many.  Once such preparation was in order, the three of them began their descent into the lake, letting Sryine’s wind settle into their own protection from the aquatic depths.  With Sryine on the job, the waters of the lake weren’t going to be a problem.

Instead, the lake had other ideas for obstacles and obstructions.  The water itself rippled with the force and vibration of the ground below.. something had just happened.  The depth of the water would have been a concern for visibility.. except for the fact that they were being followed by their own personal star.  Riyxia’s glowing intensity lit up the entire floor bed of the lake far below them, giving them the opportunity to witness the after-effects of such seismic activity.  A hiss of steam was escaping from an obsidian formation of rock at the bottom middle, the obsidian having collapsed in the process.  The three rushed to investigate, concerned to discover that there was no longer any viable passage inside.  Vwyx tried to manipulate the obsidian itself, the void stone being completely unresponsive to her gift.  She had shaped void crystals before, but this obsidian was diamond strong, its own integrity boosted by the heart of the world itself.  Vwyx simply wasn’t strong enough, her flame simply could not compare to the heart of the world.  Riyxia touched the rock preparing to crush her way through, only to find that the void itself became ravenous for her own flame on contact.  After all, the world was fully capable of feeding off of a flame such as Riyxia.. the source would even only be even more eager to do the same as well if it too had the chance.  Sryine looked upon the situation carefully, the escape route for the steam having caught her attention instead.  Looking into that a bit more carefully, she found a rather small opening leading inside.. the stones having fallen into a formation similar in shape as a crescent moon.  Sryine sighed, feeling about as lead to her discovery as the blossom in the fortress, they really had started to follow this shape everywhere, even in the strangest of circumstances.

As Sryine drew attention to the small opening, Riyxia figured out the implications.  No person could slip through something this small, the largest thing that could pass through would be a couple of icy spheres.  More than her previous idea of leaving the others behind, it appeared she would have no choice but to even leave herself behind in the process, her Spectre would have to do this alone.  Everyone else was so obviously aware of this too, while also understanding the risk involved in the process.  The vent was huge, this might be far further from her body than she had ever gone before, far more than would even be safe.  However, it also solved another problem, without the wood of her body, Liyuzhe wouldn’t be as capable of her special trick.  She had no idea what would happen if she pressed the distance limits of her spectre, but it seemed like she was going to find out, doing nothing was completely out of the question.  She turned to the others, both silently trying to prepare some kind of complaint and plan, coming up with nothing useful this time.  Riyxia presented them with a soft smile instead, also keeping silent.  If nothing else, this would mean entrusting her body to their care while she simply focused upon the trial ahead of her.. and she knew she could entrust them with such a responsibility.  While still smiling for her friends, the entire lake suddenly grew much darker for a moment as each of the ice spheres lit up in sequence.. and floated into the opening.  Riyxia left her non-glowing body to settle as close as she could to the opening without being in direct contact with the obsidian, then closed her eyes for a quick underwater nap.  She knew it would be best to conserve her own strength.

She didn’t need to worry about the presence of Sryine’s gift much further, as the heat within had appeared to entrap a bubble of superheated air.  She expected though that even the air would feel thin around here, the flame taking full dominion over all the elements present.  There was no harmony of the elements here, this was no place for the living.  She could only imagine how this would feel for Liyuzhe and the others, who had actually pressed into such a domain as normal ordinary living people.  Getting the three of them out of here was going to require some warping.. though she expected that the void around them was even working to suppress the influence of her own rifts.  Dark elements could easily be confused as a void of the elements, but it wasn’t quite the same thing, so Ieqyisa’s rifts, light or dark, would still be overwhelmed by the intensity of the obsidian around them.  If their exit was cut off completely.. there would be no escape.  It was actually incredible that the simple facts behind the obsidian hadn’t conjectured enough evidence of how crazy this whole thing actually was.  More than the crystal produced from herself, the obsidian here was the purity of the world’s void.. and nothing beyond the world itself could manipulate it.  Such a thing was itself also just as dangerous as the flame, being the effect of destruction itself.  The crystal they had would only have two outcomes, it would either shatter behind the intensity of what it couldn’t hope to contain, or it would be empowered by destruction itself and relay the same effects in kind.. just the same way obsidian worked.  It took far too many elements to negate the influence of such destruction, and this location wasn’t the best place to find any kind of harmony of the elements.

On that subject, as Riyxia pressed deeper through the vent, she noticed the spheres escorting her rapidly being spent, almost like an offering of passage.  Fire and ice working together in harmony was a completely alien concept to a place this rich with death and destruction.  With the whole area hungry for the flames contained in the frost.. Riyxia felt it best to keep her spectre outside of any sort of vessel.  Sure, the selection might leave a lot to be desired as things stood, but she really didn’t want to get eaten in the process either.  Even being linked to the spheres being consumed was harsh for her, leaving nothing to her imagination in the dangers she was presented to.  She continued to descend into the vent, to locate where Liyuzhe had gone.. and was getting worried just how far things were going.  Of course, Liyuzhe would be going as deep as she could, so as to not add additional complexity to what she was trying to achieve.  The link to the Celesi flame was strongest the deeper things ran, and that would then provide the best location to access the source too, with all the variables at their optimum.  Such was utterly wrong, but that’s exactly how Liyuzhe would think.  Technically, the deeper she went, the more her own flame felt at home with things too.  In that light, she was actually certain she was in fact going in the right direction, her instincts in the subject would be all too perfect in coming up with the answer.  It was all of the scary for many reasons, such as how that comfort was actually trying to lure her to oblivion.. and how she had already wandered deep enough to have lost over half of her sphere supply.  Much like her return trip in the last vent.. this return voyage was going to be rough.. if it was even possible.

At one point, she started to notice that measuring possibilities had even grown much harder for her to accomplish, her mind growing even more hazy for each turn of the depth.  Concentrating on basic thoughts was starting to get harder.. and that might have been affecting her for a while at that point actually, her mind frequently wandering way more than it should.  It was at that point that the truth dawned upon her, technically her mind wasn’t wandering at all, it was left at the exit of the vent with her friends, within her bound form.  She herself was only a spectre, one which had been bound to a body in the process and thus given the benefits of a mortal form.  That provided her with not just a body, but also a mind.. a place to process thoughts and memories.  All of that was growing distant from her, making any thought processes even harder.  This implied the answer to her original concerns.. about the consequences of her distance.  If she continued going forward, she would eventually be unable to sustain her link to her actual body.  At worst, that would itself be fatal, her body falling into a state of death and her essence left to the regular process of being without a body in such a death.. but even if she could be sustained for the duration of her absence, even if she made it back, there would be other problems.  She would have to progress forward on instinct and intuition alone, the feelings embedded within the essence.  If she lost access to her mind, she would have no way to think of her ideas, and no way to access any of her memories.

Such was a problem with obvious consequences, but it was not as if there was nothing she could do about it.  The ability her own essence invested upon her left her with the ability to influence the essence of others, to shape life and death.. but also would give options for smaller ideas.  She would then have to ponder and plan what she needed to know now, while she still had access to her mind, and then instill her essence with what it needed to ensure she could deal with all of the problems before her.  Such would be no simple feat, she wasn’t even aware of exactly what she would be facing.  She knew there were three people she cared about waiting down there, she knew the whole place was dangerous to everything she cared about, she knew the flames here were trying to destroy her and everything important to her.. and that the source could appear at any time as an even worse instance of the flame.  She knew there would be tools used to empower such things, the term ‘instrument’ becoming too complex for her, but at least these tools needed to be dealt with for her to get what she actually wanted.  She needed to somehow guide the three people still here out, and she needed to escape from the flame herself.. to find the place her essence had called home.  She couldn’t even remember what it was called anymore.. not the names of anything.. not even her own name.  But her essence brimmed with the feelings it was left with, the basic goals she felt she had to accomplish.

As she got deeper, she felt suddenly a wash of a presence of despair, too familiar in her past.  It was a place she had previously been forced to call home, and it had been awakened to call her back again.  No, that was the worst she had to avoid, it was bad.  Things were bad, she had to do something.  She didn’t know what she was doing, so she just rushed ahead, doing what felt right.  There was a faint glimmer of familiar, the astral flame pressing against its confinement further ahead, calling out to her.. to encourage her to join in its effort.  It was hungry, and past this one final obstruction it would be free to feast.  It was only a matter of time now.  Such a feast was bad though, such a feast was wrong, she knew this through the very core of her being, through even the flame of her essence.  There was so much more that a flame could get from being a part of such harmony than it gained from simply tearing it apart.  This flame didn’t understand, and wanted to take everything from her, to leave her starving for more of such harmony.  It was way more powerful than her simple trace of a flame, but she had to stand against it, or lose everything.

Liyuzhe realized in that moment that she had failed.  She had thought that in all of her preparation, all the things she had done.. she would be ready for the astral flame.  Faced with it herself, the realization that the little defense she had prepared would shatter, the fact that she had no way to simply close the gate that had been torn wide with power far greater than anything she had ever witnessed before.. far more than she could ever hope to control.. she had failed so completely.  Of course, how could she have ever expected to have done better than Khyzae had.  Instead, she had only made things worse.  Now, the three of them would be faced with death too.  She was also backed into a corner of the room, with no room to escape.. so she would really be faced with a true death for herself too.  All of her instruments had failed, a fact she had also forgotten about.. that the flame would render all of their equipment beyond their own control.  The gate had suffered too, in that same way.  However, the fact that it worked at all showed that it wasn’t that stuff failed, instead that she had lost control.. like she had become a victim of her own gift.  It was a horrible irony in that.  Her instruments, malfunctioning like crazy, still managed to report considerable aptitudes in the flame, a massive link between instruments here and what she had done to the other vent, resulting in growing seismic activity.  She was going to die, but she wasn’t going to die alone.  She wasn’t even just going to die with her friends, she had to face the fact that the death of all Celese was going to be completely her fault.  Riyxia.. Khyza.. had been right all along, like usual.  She really should never have doubted.  And at that thought, a small handful of glowing purple spheres entered the room, recognizable as being of the astral flame too.

“Khyzae, why.. why are you here?  I guess though, even that would be inevitable, you wouldn’t have left the world to be destroyed just sitting still.  Showing up at the last moment.. that’s been my cousin all along.  Even if I could never keep up with your pure blood, I was really hoping to have proven capable too.  But.. there really is nothing more I can do about this, and I’m pretty sure the astral flame is already seeping into this room as we speak, the three of us are honestly as good as dead.  You’re however of the same flame yourself, you’re the only one here that could by any chance do anything about it, just as always then.  Please, help me to at least spare the world from my mistake, to keep things as contained as possible.”  Liyzuhe realized that this would be the end of her, but things would be alright if Khyzae would endure.  Instead of doing something better than her cousin, she had instead done worse.  Of course, she was talking only to Riyxia, Khyzae’s successor.. but she could still strongly feel Khyzae’s presence at the same time, the girl who had always looked out for her despite her tainted half blood for all these years.  Riyxia was working to allow Khyzae’s dreams to endure, so Liyuzhe would have to entrust her own to Khyzae’s successor as well.  It would be only inevitable, after all.  Liyuzhe turned to her two companions, Fhyernx unable to focus on anything at all, Ieqyisa having fully passed out very early on.  Wisps of the astral flame were already being unleashed by the source, leading all three of them to death’s door.  All three also had lost color in various parts of their body, the astral flame having already ignited upon them.  It was far too obvious, there was no way they could survive, they were basically already dead.  As Liyuzh herself felt the last of her life fade away from her, her other final regret was that neither of them had ever been told that she actually wasn’t fully human.. only her cousin…

The spectre didn’t understand the noises being made by the people here, even though she felt everything was important.  Oh, they were the ones she had to save.. but was that even possible?  The flame, it already had them, it was far too late for such a thing.  That was bad, she felt sadness in that feeling, but there were still other things she could do, things she also felt remained important.  The room had some obvious tools, things the flame was actively using to commit its growing power.  Of course, this was the tool stuff that was bad, because the flame was bad.  She then needed to put a stop to everything.  She reached out for the instruments holding the gate open.. the source feeling her flame as if a friend.. the world heart however understanding whose side such a flame was really on.  She linked to the parts of the instrument, and began tearing the whole thing apart, even while covered in the flickers of the astral flame.  The source was not happy, recognizing such an act as a kind of betrayal, seeing that her flame was filled with the might of another.  It scoured this flame, draining it of its might, forcing it to bend to its own.  It was the strongest here, it could control everything.  However, the flame present did not want to lose its own domain to such a mighty opponent either, so instead the heart of the world shared it’s own might with this small trace, empowering it even further.  The source was still nothing more than a trickle of a presence in this world, it hadn’t had the time to forge its own dominion yet.  Torn between trying to fight with it’s limited ground against foes that should be otherwise meaningless, it still had no way to assert itself onto an object its passage depended upon.  The source didn’t assert such things, it rather more frequently only destroyed..  Destruction was exactly what that little trace wanted, to utterly destroy the gate its essence hated.  In this lair of destruction, a place where such potential was at its greatest, the trace’s will for destruction overcame all else.

The purple haze of the room quickly diminished, fading away as its access to the source became lost.  The spectre glanced around the room, seeing nothing of importance except maybe the glowing ashes in one of the corners.  The spheres however were gone too, the presence of the source having consumed everything.  The spectre was then in a daze, left perplexed on the continuation of its own existence.  It had a direction to go, but would it even make it?  It couldn’t even ponder such an idea, not without any mind of its own.  All it had was a feeling of uncertainty.  However, it also felt.. refreshed?  The world had no wants for the foreign flames that it had been exposed to, threatened its own.. but it could tell such flames were similar in nature to the small trace that had appeared to protect its own dominion.  Instead of taking any flame away, the heart of the world made an offering of the unwanted flame to the trace, making use of it as a presence to be rid of such a thing.  This trace.. it wanted to escape the domain of the world too.. to reach the expanse beyond its own domain.  If that happened, it would be rid of such an unwanted presence, an idea that could prove to work completely in its own favour.

Such a trace then was left untouched in its return, to freely depart from the lair of destruction without threat of being destroyed itself.  Instead, Celese would have much greater plans for such a trace.. one that was deeply ingrained in the fabric of the world’s veil itself.

EA – Chapter 77

Unattainable Serenity

Vwyx grabbed the passing Sryine with her only hand, bringing her aboard the makeshift raft in the wild rapids of the water currents.  Sryine was actually unconscious at the time, having passed out for a moment once she made contact with the water.

Sryine sputtered awake, feeling absolutely miserable.  That was absolutely the worst opportunity to simply pass out, what if Riyxia.. where was she anyway?  Sryine was quick to discover that being as dizzy as she was, the spinning craft was simply making things worse for her, she couldn’t concentrate at all.  Vwyx really wasn’t feeling any better, the nausea climbing as the ride progressed.  They approached a platform that was reasonably close to the water level, Vwyx picking up Sryine with her single available arm in order to ensure they both made it.  The fact that it was their healer that was attacking them so relentlessly was becoming a very serious issue, they were both in some serious need of medical care, and there was no chance of it even happening.  Sryine in the meanwhile was realizing something else, she might have been putting some attempts into controlling water in what seemed like the same style as every other scenario, but it wasn’t the same.  As the wooden raft drifted off, it’s small design doing its best to hold firm against the raging currents, Sryine recalled the one piece she had been missing, wood elemental.  This place needed more wood for her to work with.  Vwyx’s health concerns for herself were also mediated a bit when she noticed an ersatz float by.  Of course, all the injury suffered by ersatz would have left an impact on Riyxia, they weren’t the only ones injured fighting their healer.  This entire feeling was still harsh for Vwyx, being the one with the constant responsibility to return repairs for Riyxia, as her own personal healer.  She wondered just how many of the ersatz lost here might possibly be salvageable too.  In all accounts though, that’s about the only repairs they needed to worry about, Riyxia herself wasn’t even bleeding much at this point, her personal injuries were rather light.

Sryine followed Vwyx’s gaze in an initial concern, worried if the ersatz had actually moved in that time and was preparing to attack them.  Instead, no, it really was just floating by, much like the raft had.  Actually.. a lot like the raft…  Of course, all the discarded ersatz around the place, now devoid of Riyxia’s flame, were effectively a collection of life-like elements much like a regular person.  However, they were much more elemental in nature.. such as physically being of a very wood-element nature.  By discarding control over so many ersatz, there was thus an assorted collection of wood elements all over the place.  Even so, this was only a start, she needed to make a forest of her own within this metal garden, to have a forest that was simply more than just trees.  To that end, she would need Vwyx’s help.. the two of them would actually have to put some serious teamwork into a lot else.  Throwing water and frost alone wasn’t enough, they needed to really bring the ice down on Riyxia.  In tandem, the combination of both elements, committing both together in the goal of sapping Riyxia’s ability.. until she stopped trying to kill them.  Sure, that wouldn’t solve their problems, there would be a lot else involved, but if Riyxia stopped trying to kill them, then maybe they would have the opportunity to actually figure out everything else.  At the very least, maybe she would have the chance to recover her own balance.. the world no longer spinning so much in the process.

“Vwyx, can you give this place a lot more wood?  If there was more wood to work with, I would be able to turn the tides of things and bring water around to our side.  With that behind us, we could weather your frosting before us with the water to wither her whether she would try to weather your contribution or mine.  After that she maybe might.. after.. now…”  “Okay, I get it, I think.  Just shut up, you’re not the only one feeling dizzy right now, your crazy is just making things worse.”  Sryine stopped trying to figure out where she was going with her statement to Vwyx, really having gotten lost in the principle of the idea.  It was like her head was going in circles.. actually, that wasn’t even inaccurate, that’s exactly what being dizzy implied.  Vwyx had taken into honest account that even without being vocal, that swirl of misshapen logic was exactly how overwhelmed Sryine’s mind was at this point, they both needed a bit more clarity and direction.  Seeing things, even in the literal sense, was challenging for her.. this magnification of her sight giving her eyes almost an elf-like potential.  Wait, while adjusting to such could be difficult, that could still present her with some viable benefits.  Living so much around elves, she was well aware of how the physical differences between both affected their potentials.  Working with instruments since, she had been faced with recognizing how an elf’s improved senses provided them with a much more powerful sense of focus.  To that end, she needed to focus upon her gift, to make use of this keen depth of vision that was applied to it.  She swept around carefully, intent not on the ground but on all of the broken shards of metal and stone scattered around.  She was a craftswoman, she needed to polish her art to a perfection, to get everything.  Her body flared as the flame supplemented into her gift, adding extra might into its deliverance.  She had never crafted something over such a vast area before, but Riyxia’s inadvertent gift made this actually a bit easier.. surprisingly enough.  Soon, the water rippled as wooden branches spiralled out from it all over the place.  The water fought to sustain its intensity.. but the pattern of wood started to shift the water’s flow into a constant single clockwise whirl around the room, completely uniform.

With this much of a combined force going on, the water’s force attempted to extend its influence towards the other elements of the room, bringing the cold wind into the same cycle, the air rushing into a funnel wind.  Sryine, having turned away from the spiral of water to watch the air, noticed how the dazzling lights of the frost quickly faded when the air was suddenly so violently disturbed.  She wasn’t the only one to notice, Riyxia taking anger from the sudden shift herself.  It didn’t take much for her to notice what had caused it, the two girls down below.. who were planting trees or something of all things.  It was stupid, her flames could incinerate such flintwood without any challenge.. the creature of creation were so stupid.  In her rage, Riyxia missed the forest for the trees.  Riyxia lashed out with a flying drop kick towards the platform the girls were standing on.. only to find herself thrown across the room by a wave of the water.  Sryine’s laughter broke across the room, she had done it.. she was in control of the water in the room.  The intensity of the water here was also insane, the collection of speed actually making entering the water at this point possibly even more dangerous than before.  The harmony of elements were all working together far too strongly.  Riyxia though wasn’t about to give up, surging towards them with the might of her flame from her spectral form instead, the violet flame burning with incredible intensity.  The water caught her, but it wasn’t quite enough, slamming into both girls and sending them flying in different directions.  Riyxia was keenly attributed to the harmony of the elements, having dominion over life and death itself.. the unison and destruction of elements.  Rending apart that unity was simply something she was good at.

Both girls clung to new platforms in the distance, their gifts providing them with the leverage they needed to not fall into the water.  Sryine was worried she couldn’t keep up, that her demand over the flame would expire her physical ability to keep up with such wide application usage of it.. but she was surprised to find sustaining control over the water wasn’t as draining as she would have thought.  Of course, Riyxia had improved her adrenaline in order to have her bleeding and injury worsen.  This however had the additional side effect of increasing how much stamina she had at her command, increasing the aptitude of her gift.  Making her blood run faster only brought more of her gift to bear.. it was what transported her ability over the gift, after all.  She wondered if this was how things felt for Vwyx, a human of the flame.. supposedly humans did have this increased adrenaline by nature.  If her gift was going to remain so promising for her, she saw no reason to stop there.  Forget just commanding water.. Sryine reached out to the wind too, bringing control over her entire environment to her will.  Lightning began to surge endlessly through the raging waters, while the wind itself started to pick her up off the metal platform and provide her with a sense of stability.  It was strange, now the world really was spinning.. but she felt rather stable in her mastery of the elements.  Her flame, yet another element supporting her every move, blazed its purple hue over her as a demonstration of its continued support.

Vwyx felt the sudden fill of wind, her own gift having caught her by shaping the metal before her in the process.  Of course, this whole room was her craft now, free for her to shape it as she willed.  The energy elements of the room were all on her side.. except for those of the flame.  Sryine had said something about bringing ice to their command, a force that could yield the intensity needed to convert the flame before them also to their side.  In that moment, she recalled a thought she had only considered in passing earlier, a memory that rose from Sryine’s plan.  She had considered that it could be very possible to contain a flame inside a frost prison, to seal it away in the process.  This flame though was a bit much for her, she would need something more.. and Sryine was providing just that.  Sealing Ryixia would give them an opportunity to do something more.. but there was a problem with this.  Vwyx had measured before too that sustaining such a seal would put constant demands on her just to ensure that the frost was not overwhelmed by the flame.. and that would be even more true in this case.  She could create such a seal, but then she would have to depend on Sryine to deal with everything else.  To prepare for such an effort, Vwyx took command over the elements at her own disposal in preparation for the process.  Spinning the shadows into the wind, spinning the frost into the wind, spinning stone into the wind, she made the very presence of the world reverse until her command over the dark aspect of gravity inverted all gravitational force for everyone in the room, making those of the fire suddenly rise to the ceiling and walk upside down.  Sryine was momentarily alarmed by this inversion, but managed to work with the wind to still shape this movement, Vwyx simply landing on the ceiling like she just didn’t care at all.  Riyxia however was in much less control over her momentum, crashing into the ceiling hard as all of her ersatz.

“Vwyx, did you do this?  I can tell you this is rather trippy, I just hope I don’t tr-…”  “Sryine, shut up.  If you’ve really got control over all that water up.. down there, I’m going to need it.  With it, I can finally trap Riyxia, giving us an opportunity to maybe do something more.  However, keeping her contained is going to take everything I have, I’m going to have to count on you to deal with the rest.  You’re going to need to work with her in a frozen state and bring her back to us.  I don’t expect I will be capable of holding on long, so you better have a plan ready for when I begin.  Once you’ve got something to work with, just pass me a supply of the water and I’ll get started.”  Sryine paused at Vwyx’s plan, realizing the implications of it.  Vwyx planned to deal with the entire physical threat Riyxia offered them all on her own.. and would then in turn leave everything else for Sryine to figure out.  She would even have limited time to accomplish such a feat, Vwyx certainly would find it difficult to hold out for too long.  They were however still left with the problem that Riyxia did not sleep, her spectre was always awake.  Well, almost always, there was that one time when Riyxia’s spectre had to sleep after reviving Ayzherie.  Wait.. could she make that work for her?  Why had the spectre fallen asleep again?  Sryine considered some of the details Riyxia had presented to them about the experience.  She had said the feeling was of being weakened, drained.. similar to how it felt to go too long without food.  Eating, the flame considers food differently than most, it cares about the warmth of the food.  Trapped in a cage of ice.. that might make it feel a lot more hungry.. but Riyxia’s flame was enough to endure that for a long time.  However.. what if Riyxia was led to simply believe otherwise.  Sryine recalled creating a horror of water at the bridge using her illusion.. an illusion even of her design having overwhelmed her so completely.  Commanding an illusion of ice with the full force of her ability could make Riyxia feel starving.

However, would that be enough?  Riyxia was in a very angry state, simply encouraging sleep might not be enough when it couldn’t be simply enforced.  Sryine was well aware enough how restless her spectre felt typically most nights, how such restlessness could even have an impact on her body’s sleep if she wasn’t completely relaxed.  Even their rest earlier that day, Riyxia had found it difficult to relax, making sleep elusive for her until she really made the whole thing boring.  It wouldn’t be enough to simply make the spectre feel starved, she also needed to instil a feeling of pure relaxation somehow in addition to that.  Being starved and relaxed at the same time.. that seemed like a challenge in its own right.  Sryine needed something that would inspire tranquility to Riyxia.. a scene comfortable and yet devoid of all warmth, something which would further her hunger yet present her exactly what she would want.  In her current destructive trance though, she really wanted nothing.. literally nothing, all things simply destroyed in a void of emptiness as bleak as the night sky.  Wait.. almost literally the night sky, Riyxia’s greatest passion was always for the stars.  It dawned on her only then too.. the faint shimmering above them, the same she had ended, Riyxia had kept quiet right up until then.  Even in her current state, her passion for the stars remained.  Sryine would have to simply torment her with illusions of such dreams.. the distance from Celese being rendered as if nothing but an empty void, the cold desolation sapping her of everything she held as the stars she wished were just a bit further ahead.  Sryine wasn’t an expert in what it might be like up there beyond the boundary of the world, no one had ever experienced it before.. but all she needed to do was to instil the flood of impressions of the stars growing ever closer, and the void sapping away all of Riyxia’s strength like it was a source of the void itself.

Vwyx found a whirl of water appearing suddenly before her, a clear and obvious warning signal for them to proceed.  That was good, because Riyxia had actually regained her orientation and had actually been on the offense while Sryine was so completely distracted.  At least, Sryine had seemed distracted, the whirl having thrown and electrified Riyxia in it’s sudden presence simply to interrupt Riyxia’s attack.  It had probably helped that the frost mist was back again, slowing down Riyxia’s attacks in the process.  It was surprising for Vwyx too, Sryine hadn’t actually been left with much time to consider things.. only turned for a moment while Riyxia stood up to attack.  However, as the acceleration shell around Sryine faded, Vwyx realized that Sryine hadn’t left herself so unprepared.  Of course, in matters of planning, Sryine could provide herself with all the time in the world.  Vwyx felt that was good and all, but it would be up to her to provide Sryine with enough time to make that plan happen.  It wasn’t as if they even had time to go over such a plan, it wouldn’t even be smart to cover such basic details with Riyxia around in the process.  Vwyx would simply have to do her best, and trust Sryine to take care of the rest.  Taking her part in the process, Vwyx melded the frost in the air with the water offered to her, freezing the entire thing in a mass of ice.  Vwyx then began reshaping and reconstructing the very ice itself, folding it onto itself as a multi-layered sphere.  Riyxia’s body came at them again, her strike ready to crush through the ice sphere before her.  The ice however moved with her own motion, folding onto the momentum and bouncing from all surfaces completely harmlessly.  Riyxia’s spectre went to address the sudden threat, determined to shatter such a prison.. only to find the prison itself ready to take in another host.  Her spectre though would not be contained, it had passed through walls before, and so it pressed upon this wall as well.  However, her spectre wasn’t efficient at passing through water, something she had only recently learned about for herself, the water elements of the ice prison effectively trapping even her spectre.  Vwyx smiled at this turn of circumstances, Riyxia having completely underestimated the might of the frost and thus becoming captivated by it.

Sryine however knew that such wasn’t the only thing that needed to capture Riyxia’s attention, the intensity of Riyxia’s flame already fighting to break down the integrity of the seal.  Intent on also capturing Riyxia’s complete attention, Sryine redesigned the visual layout within such an icy confinement, rendering everything pitch black and empty.  She intensified the feeling of cold within the seal, the feeling that all flame was being devoured by something even greater.. and then she scattered the desolation with tiny sparkles, a scatter of stars in the desolation of space.  Riyxia was thus completely alone, far far away from even Celese.. maybe the whole world just stopped existing instead.  All that was left before her was her dream realized, the path to the stars finally her own.  Riyxia stopped fighting, an understanding that she was simply wasting her flame in such desolate nothingness.  There really was no reason to fight either, she was exactly where she wanted to be.  Her craving for destruction was even realized, she was submerged in it, the very destruction seeking to drain her as well.  That would certainly take a while, she could just relax in this perfect place.. waiting for the end to eventually come for her.  As her hunger for the flame intensified, her hunger for destruction left her completely.. and her spectre took solace within its body in rest at last.

Riyxia gasped awake as the seal that confined her was shattered, both Vwyx and Sryine visibly worried.  There was concern that they had been too quick to awaken her before her control had recovered.. there was also concern that they had been too slow, the illusion thus consuming her so completely to have instead taken all of her.  Sryine was really worried that she might have overdone it, not actually being aware just how much such desolation would feel like death itself.  Riyxia however was not lost to them, even her control was finally restored.  Sure, after bringing the entire collection of her flame into the single body.. she had possibly the worst case of flame concentration ever.. but she was fine otherwise.  Riyxia was well aware of how she was like a violet sun within the room, a star in entirely her own sense, but that was not her greatest concern at that moment.  Turning to her friends, bearing witness to their substantial injuries, the shock and dread tried to drain even the violet from her face and leave her that pale.  She turned to apply her gift to them, to mend their wounds.. only to find that their flames were resisting that as well.  Right, all of those injuries, they were of her own doing.. she had effectively betrayed her closest friends, her own family effectively.  Depression surged through her, tears of a colorless flame blazing down her cheeks.  She wiped them away, the tears not actually burning her.. but that was not to say she was without pain and agony, a fear of broken ties after doing something so unforgivable, and a sadness of such might that it overpowered the intense rage her flame was offering to her.

“Don’t worry, things are going to be fine.  You’re back with us, that’s what really matters.  None of this is your fault, you’re just as much a victim of this as we are.”  “Liyuzhe really made a huge mistake with this one, though I worry her goals were still met nonetheless.  I learned Riyxia was set here as a trap to distract us.. though I expect there were no plans for things to end up this bad.  Actually, on that subject, Liyuzhe apparently was on her way to the vent a while ago.. having everything she needed to make her dreams happen.  I’m not sure how much time we can afford to waste here.  I mean, Riyxia’s state earlier was dangerous enough that she could have possibly single-handedly wiped out the entire world.. but Liyuzhe could very easily accomplish just the same thing if she completes her own work, right?”  Sryine wasn’t even aware of the additional information Vwyx had to offer, there had been no time to discuss it.  This then left both Sryine and Riyxia staring at Vwyx in shock as they all started to consider that their problems weren’t quite over yet.  Sryine braced to endure the pain, realizing that even though Riyxia’s healing was finally starting to have a degree of effect.. there wouldn’t be an opportunity to wait.  Instead, she applied her gift to the wind, bracing herself in a wind that served both as a cushion and a brace.  Vwyx considered the idea, fashioning the more practical form from metal over her arm and shoulder for the exact same purpose.  Vwyx quickly otherwise recounted the details of the recording, building an awareness of just what they were still dealing with.

“Okay, I’ll take care of this, you two have done enough.  Just wait here I guess, I’ll be back when things are done.”  Riyxia slipped down through the ladder.. flopping onto the floor as gravity restored its normal orientation.  Right, for a moment, she had forgotten that was a thing.  Having control taken from her had left some of her memories rather hazy.  “Wait, do you even know how to get out of here?”  “Yup, I have a pretty good idea on that one.”  “And.. how exactly do you plan to dive into a lake, maybe?  I seem to recall that even your spectre finds the water really hard to work with.. so what options might you have left?  Worse, you still have that stupid fragment.. you’re going to enter a place filled with more flame.. and you’re clearly in no position to take any more of it into you.  Stop just trying to do everything, dang it!  You would figure that, after everything we just had to go through, you would understand that you could count on us to have your back.”  Sryine finally managed to pull the backpack from Riyxia’s possession, putting it on her own back instead.  Riyxia was ready to complain about how little condition the others were to do anything.. but even Vwyx showed up with a stern expression.  Being so emotionally torn, having far too much flame to work with, Riyxia might not actually be physically injured, but she wasn’t exactly in peak condition either.  There were also concerns like actually dealing with the barrier presented by the lake.. and the fact that Liyuzhe could just simply try to control her again leading to even more problems.  These were things she had no solution for on her own, she would need her friends there to ensure they were addressed.

“Okay, but that means we’re all taking care of each other.  Vwyx, when you have an opportunity, I’m going to need a few sheets of metal.. or I guess the shape is totally up to you.  Basically, something I can store extra flame into, so the vent can take it back.  Sryine, could you somehow provide it with a nice coat of water or something.. like a barrier securing the flame?”  “Now that’s rude, after all the hard work Vwyx has done with her own research, you’re still not even seeing the value of her incredible sealing technique.  By the divine, stop underappreciating it, ice is cool!  Sure, if you’ve got some problems with passing through water, it’s going to be rough to give you something you could possess, but her seal was really good at holding a spectre.. so I’m pretty certain we can make something.  She would just have to be nice enough to provide you with a non-water exit or something, more frost than water at least.”  Riyxia was actually surprised by Sryine’s sudden inspiration, the thought really not having come to her.  She would be taking such a thing into the vent too, a place where the flame is too strong.  The last time, she had endured the heat thanks to Ayzherie’s gift, itself of the frost element actually, now that she thought about it.  She felt like a fool for not having considered such details before.  Technically too, it was for this mistake that Vwyx had proven such a powerful advantage against her in that previous battle too…

They would need to be prepared to deal with the vent again, that was all too certain.  The might of the astral flame could not be underestimated, its presence would once again be overpowering.

EA – Chapter 76

Unstoppable Destruction

Explanations had proven more than just challenging once Riyxia had spotted them, but Sryine had heard enough to get the basic idea of what was going on.  What as of yet remained a bigger problem was how to deal with the situation left to them.

“You know, I don’t think this is working.. It’s just making her mad.. or more mad.. madder?”  “Shut up, please, I don’t care, it’s not like we’ve got any other ideas to work with, and right now I think this is better than dying.  Besides, aren’t you the one here losing her sanity?”  “Oh right, good point.  It doesn’t madder.. matter anyway, fighting with ourselves would be crazy when we’re already fighting among ourselves.  Honestly though, crazy is one thing, but let’s not be stupid.  Running around like fools all day would be just foolish, we need to instead figure out how to be the ones doing the fooling and turn everything around on her.”  “If you’ve actually got an idea, I’m all ears.  Until then, shut up!”  Sryine giggled as she otherwise complied with Vwyx’s uncompromising demands.  It was surprising just how much of a truce the two of them had found themselves in when left exposed to an overdominant flame that conflicted to the will of their natural selves.  It was like each side of themself had taken a moment to plead to the other for help, only to realize that the other could do nothing without help.  This left the weirdest feeling for Sryine, like she had totally gone insane.. but with her own will remaining intact.  She was thus pondering careful plans and ideas, laughing at her own cleverness.  The best of both worlds.. and still really awkward.  Vwyx was in a very similar position, being very distant and dismissive, stern and uncompromising, a feeling of being devoid of emotion while still actually fully concerned about the situation and the state of her friends.

Sryine suddenly found herself off balance, the world spinning around her as her sense of balance was destroyed.  It really didn’t help that she was already mentally off balance too, that just made her even more dizzy.  Sryine fell to the ground as an ersatz came down on her hard with a drop kick to the spine.  She could feel her back tearing apart by the blow, assisted by Riyxia’s attempt to unmake her in the process.  The flame within however tempered her, trying to resist this considerable influence.  Even so, she wasn’t strong enough to block such out completely, the whole thing tearing upon her in the process.  Vwyx rushed to Sryine’s aid, creating cloth bandages from metal shards rapidly over Sryine to provide some aspect of support.  It was the best she could do without the healing process they had grown used to.  In the process of providing such support, Vwyx left herself wide open to an attack, an opportunity Riyxia capitalized upon.  The sharp punch pierced right through Vwyx’s shoulder blade, completely dislocating her right arm.  This was really bad, the threat of the flame they faced was beyond what they could handle.  Riyxia herself stepped forward, a mantle of purple flame blazing over her body like she was a demon out of some nightmare.  Sryine coughed a faint pained chuckle at the irony, even her grimmest illusions were never as real as the actual demon that they currently faced.  Vwyx clutched her broken arm with her unbroken one, thankful that she was being deprived of the pain even if it did nothing for her feelings of dread.  As the haze of the flame generated from the conflict and the injuries started to turn the room itself black, the heat of the room grew steadily stronger.  To Sryine and Vwyx, it was as if the very flame they had grown to depend on had suddenly betrayed them, turned against them, and was overwhelming them.

A sudden rumble of the room agreed with such an assessment, as instruments of the room finally detected ambient heat above acceptable limits.  A siren broke out through the room as the emergency water cooling system finally came to life.  Panels everywhere split open as a high pressure force of ice-water was propelled into the room at a massive speed in equally massive quantities.  Sryine rushed to protect herself with a wind bubble before she was suddenly completely submerged.  Vwyx made use of another gravity grenade to throw her into the air, avoiding the cold by remaining within the heat in the upper section of the room.  Neither of them were in a very good situation with this sudden complication, as Vwyx was suddenly aware just how unstable the above platforms actually were.  Sryine meanwhile was having trouble moving, but was at this point fully underwater, leaving all of her concentration simply to keep her wind bubble active.  Dread set upon them both as they realized just how vulnerable they actually were to this environment.  However, moments later, they both realized that there was no follow up attack to come afterwards.  Riyxia had stood her grounds in defiance of the water threat, bringing the compounded strength of her flame to bear.  Celesi water however still had enough strength to compete with her, and an equally mighty flame stands no chance against the might of its equal in water.  Thousands of ersatz were water blasted across the room, crushed into walls and pillars with a torrent of remorseless water.  Eventually, Riyxia was forced to withdraw as well, the pain of a few ersatz crushed completely beneath the waters still washing over her.

Sryine’s eyes lit up in understanding.  Riyxia was currently superior to them with the flame, she had a strong advantage over them with the flame, but not once had she had any opportunity to invest in working with any of the flame’s weaknesses, instead she had left that to her friends to deal with.  The water.. it was her only advantage over Riyxia, the only thing she had to defend herself with.  She needed to turn her weakness into her strength, she needed her flame to trust in her ability to do so as well.  First, she needed a way to stand, but she remained too dizzy, her head couldn’t see anything straight.  Oh of course, the dizziness was all simply in her mind, and if she was left with the illusion that things were not spinning.. Sryine got up and stumbled again, of course her visual coordination couldn’t completely compensate when she was basically clouding things over with an illusion.  Making use of the wall nearby, she followed along it scaling upwards with her bubble, the winds fighting against the whirling rage of the water.  She tried to manipulate the water to calm down.. but it did not listen.  Wait, why was her influence over the water so much less than it was before?  It left her with her challenges, but they weren’t at a loss yet.  If water did not listen, there was another way to bring weakness upon the flame, she needed to reach Vwyx.  Finally reaching the surface, floating upon the water with a drift of the wind, Sryine called out as loudly as she could.

“Vwyx, don’t just depend on the raw might of the flame, turn Riyxia’s own flame against her.  Teach her the weakness of the flame!”  Sryine’s voice was pulled by a sharp wind, ensuring it would cross over the distance required.  The sharp wind brought with it a sharp chill, making Vwyx shiver.  Cold, of course, this flood of water was not just strictly water elemental, it was also filled with frost elemental, an element that the air above was quickly brimming with.  Normally, that should be reason for concern, her own flame being ever so vulnerable in these circumstances.  However, there was someone who didn’t even know to compensate for such a chill, who thought that frost brought no real threat to the flame.  Vwyx would have to take this opportunity to show Riyxia just how wrong she really was.  Vwyx quickly found Riyxia, who was currently completely distracted by the threat presented by the water.  Of course, the water was a problem, even Riyxia’s spectre would struggle with waters this dangerous.  Vwyx primed another grenade, throwing wide above Riyxia, exploding in the air far above the target.  Vwyx had played with several gravity grenades, but there was another she had gotten fairly good with.. even while being neglected.  Mist grenades.  Infusing the explosion with the frost element, drawing further upon all of the frost around her, Vwyx saturated the open air with the will of the frost.  This effect spread down upon Riyxia, covering her.  Riyxia tried to move, but found her own movement dramatically reduced, the chill of the air making the exposed flame flicker as it quickly got weaker.  Riyxia tried to flee the area, only to find Vwyx ready with a follow up strike, a second grenade that made use of just how dark the room had gotten suddenly at that moment.  Shadows stretched wide, obscuring everything, leaving Riyxia to run headlong into a pillar instead.  She had no idea where to go now, the darkness around her competing against her flame with the help of the frost.

Left completely open, Vwyx was ready with a third grenade, her trademark favourite.  Gravity surged around Riyxia, the might of the darkness present making such forces even stronger, the platform she was standing on completely incapable of dealing with the additional force.. as was the one below it, and the one below that.  Riyxia was thrown directly into the water with considerable speed, leaving Vwyx to grin slightly.  See, this is why she felt validated by her belief that heights were dangerous.. even if that implied that it was all her fault that such heights might be dangerous.  This combination left Riyxia in a bad situation, the water below her threatening to take everything from her in an aquatic surge of water elements, the air above her threatening the same using frost and darkness.  Any dispute for the worst-case was cleared up however when Sryine unleashed a lightning surge through the waters, electrifying many of the ersatz still inside.  Her face went pale when she considered what she had done, forgetting in that moment just how much taking out the other ersatz would affect Riyxia’s own health.  They were trying to stop her, but they needed to not kill her in the process.  Stopping her though wasn’t going to be easy.  Sryine and Vwyx had recovered when rendered unconscious.. but Riyxia’s spectre never sleeps.  Instead, they would have to find another way to restore her control.

Riyxia meanwhile realized that there was becoming too much of a liability of having targets spread out from her, against two enemies it would be far more efficient to keep numbers low.  Riyxia drew the links of the unwanted ersatz back into her.. which also had the effect of drawing in the flame contained by those ersatz along with it.  All of this flame went to one particular ersatz, the one which was then obviously host to the spectre.  This ersatz however shone like a beacon, making Riyxia’s actual body look like a faint candle in comparison.  The ersatz in question had her hair in a bun.. clasped up with a crescent moon hairpin.  There was no idea what color her hair might have been originally, it was a blaze of purple at the moment.  The pure black of her outfit was further decorated by the depth of purple her body generated naturally.  Every ounce of her skin was purple, with lines and patches of skin being somehow even more a vibrant violet, the saturation of flame within having exceeded simply a full dispersal.  Her eyes carried this violet as well, a blaze of piercing gaze like some kind of dark goddess of destruction, the aptitude of such a significant concentration of the flame being unquestionably world-changing.

Vwyx had no idea what happened.  For a moment, she was watching Riyxia choose ice over water, again underestimating the threat of the cold.. and the next she was suddenly embedded into the wall after going through a couple of pillars.  The gift wasn’t even used on her, to affect her reflexes or anything, that was all just brutal speed and strength, a thirst for life and blood.  Sryine had finally gotten out of the water.. to then find herself just as suddenly embedded into the ceiling.  Cuts from the solid metal sliced into them, creating even further injury as their blood poured free.  Sryine naturally simply fell onto one of the platforms below, struggling to her feet despite hardly having anything together.. the pain being remorseless.  A few drops of her blood hit the platform.. and the whole thing buckled by the flame, dropping her even further below.  Sryine became faintly aware as to what was going on, thanks to a subtle clarity in her thoughts.  The platforms could not endure her blood at all, the flame was everything against her.  Sryine started to take great strides in ensuring her blood did not reach the platform she stood upon, everything being precarious as a result.  To add to her stability, Sryine actually used a cushion of air to walk upon over the platforms.  She could consider doing the same with basic air, but without having things providing her coordination physically, that was bound to have her trip and fall again.

Riyxia however was fully in recognition of the advantage brought to her by the flame.  She too was injured, but her flame was so concentrated that the flame she gave off in blood was being consumed the moment it was released.  Willfully hampering that influence, she tossed a couple of drops of living inferno in Sryine’s direction, melting through the pillar beside her and throwing her backwards and downwards several levels.  Sryine wasn’t sure what was causing her head to spin more, the tumbling, or the fact that Riyxia’s blood incinerated a solid metal pillar.  That really wasn’t some light heat, that was flame strong enough to surpass high quality stone elemental, something her own imbued blood would only discolor in the process.  She was worried about the potential danger.. until she noticed a few drops had connected with her actual body in the process, to no effect.  Of course, they were all resistant to each other’s astral flame, even the higher concentration didn’t impact that.  Sryine took command of the drops of blood offered to her, ready to weaponize it in return.. to no effect.  So.. in much the same way, even her own gift wasn’t enough to influence Riyxia’s own flame, even as blood droplets.  The flame resisted the flame, equal qualities of flame having no power or control over each other.

Vwyx was becoming quickly aware of how dangerous her own situation had become, knowing she too was also bleeding.  A speck of blood landed, and she fell.  She worked frantically, searching for a way to suppress the problem, to avoid falling further, her fear blinding her.  Her frantic attempts to avoid spilling blood resulted in precarious movement that tipped her over the side and had her fall despite her efforts and without affecting the metal of the platform.  Riyxia, even in her rage, was interested in how much her two enemies were just almost fully capable of destroying themselves.  The one, skilled with fear, was weakened by her own injury.  The other, skill with pain, was absorbed by her own terror.  She applied her gift to both, improving upon their sensory abilities as it would apply to each weakness.  Vwyx suddenly felt a huge rush of vertigo, like the distance of her height had been rendered in all the more clarity.  Sryine felt her adrenaline increase while her nerves became even more receptive to contact.  Vwyx tumbled at last straight into the water, the churning depths below her seeming ever the more intimidating as she tried to grasp to a pillar using her only functional arm.  Sryine felt the bite of the cold in the air, the nerves of her skin growing tense in the chill to add to the problem of a mind numbing degree of pain from her existing wounds, especially along her back.  Riyxia had just effectively not only exposed them to the feelings only controlled by the other, she had increased problems from elements they were vulnerable to that only the other had practiced working with.

Sryine quickly started to realize that the feeling of her flame was becoming fleeting, her flame struggling to endure the cold itself while also keeping her healthy.  She had already endured a lot, this problem was sapping her even faster.  Even by simply feeling drained, she was finding it difficult to command enough heat to stay warm, causing a cyclic reaction.  The depth of cold had been increasing as well, the effects of Vwyx’s mist grenade having compounded with the room’s increasing attempt at decreasing temperature.  Flakes of frost started to fall from above, like tiny white stars twinkling in the darkness of a night’s sky.  Vwyx meanwhile was finding that even though the water level had stopped rising, the water current was still going strong.  Finding herself attacked abruptly resulted in her being forced to let go and flow with the current.  She needed a better way to float with the water.. so called upon some wood made from discarded stone and metal to float around with.  She noticed this sudden passage of speed also had her attacked less.. but with her improved depth of vision it simply made her get even more dizzy.  Sryine noticed Vwyx though, the floating wood being used in conjunction with the water reminded her of exactly what she still lacked in her current environment.  Taking advantage of the sudden opportunity, Sryine simply slipped over the edge and willfully fell into the water, somehow still avoiding being noticed.  She needed to reach Vwyx somehow, pool their resources, come up with the ultimate combination of the elements to deal with the threat of the flame presented to them.  However, with the cold making her feel so tired, keeping track of Vwyx was all too impossible.

Riyxia however hadn’t lost track of either Vwyx or Sryine in the water, she had gotten distracted because of the frost.  The presence of falling sparkles reminded her so much of the stars, having her suddenly hesitate at that moment.

EA – Chapter 75

Mesmerizing Coordination

Sryine at this point was starting to feel absolutely foolish, but she continued to follow the nonsensical path presented for her.  No matter how stupid it might be to follow the path of such lunacy, it wasn’t as if she had anything more sensible to guide her forwards instead.

Sryine threw the blossom onto the wind again, letting it flutter a bit until a gust pulled it from her and picked another direction.  She would have thought that the thing would have been completely random in what it did, fickle as the wind, but the blossom had been constant in its direction the entire time.  Sryine was left wondering if, just maybe, if the place was actually haunted.. that maybe it was haunted by some actually nice ghosts.  Well, maybe not some, maybe just one or two of them were nice.. no more than four at the very most.  She rounded a bend and found the blossom resting beside a ladder leading into the depths below.  She reached out for the blossom, which suddenly fell down the ladder instead, disappearing beyond her sight.  Down then?  Alright, if that’s how things were going to be, that’s where she was going to go.

Vwyx pulled out the map again, trying hard to figure out where the recording might have been taken from.  She looked at the map again, her eyes settling on the eleventh sector of the building, the lowest level.  The label there said something about a cooling lab.. or something like that, most of the words were cut off.  She had a feeling that.. okay fine, so she just needed to figure out where this place was, thank you very much voice in the head.  Now, if the same voice could be so nice, maybe she could figure out where she currently…  Vxyw looked at the central part of the map, the very middle section was marked as a surveillance room.  She didn’t even need any additional feelings for that one, it just sort of made sense at that point.  Now all she needed to do was to figure out the map enough to plot a route from where she was to where she needed to go.  On her way out, she bid farewell and thanks to the strange feeling that had haunted her while helping her out, carefully treading a path so that she wouldn’t get lost any further.

Sryine carefully descended the ladder to the shakey metal platform suspended below.  Looking around, she noticed that she had entered some sort of huge room of some variety.  The room had occasionally staggered lights reflecting bright spots of an otherwise dim room that expanded not only far beyond her, but also well below her.  For climbing down, she was actually very high up.. an impression she suspected Vwyx would hate to also be exposed to.  However, on the other hand, she could only wish Vwyx was there at the time, the construction of her footing being considerably lacking and greatly in need of skilled improvements.  Traversing along the network of platforms progressing both deeper and further into the room, Sryine suddenly found herself exposed to a shortcut in her descent, the hinges of the platform giving way to drop her unto the platform below it.. which then also gave way.  Finding herself a couple of levels down abruptly, Sryine brushed herself off, checking for any active bleeding.  Of course, bleeding all over the fragile platforms would only make things even worse, her blood warping the metal on contact.  Fortunately, her new injuries weren’t serious enough to cause such problems, bruising forming most of it.

During her descent, Sryine eventually realized that the light of the room wasn’t strictly caused by normal light, there was also a faint purple hue to the ambient light of the expansive room.  As she got closer, she also noticed the faint shimmer around the lower levels of the room as well.  There was something related to the astral flame around here, that was all too certain, something far too familiar.  The regular path of descent was taking far too long for Sryine, a sense of curiosity and a frustration of the ruthless path causing her to opt for the most efficient shortcut instead.  Skipping from one of the main walls, Sryine made a dramatic drop directly to the ground below, the metal forming the base of the room being much more like the regular halls she had been traversing in the meanwhile.  At the bottom level, she found the room littered with a variety of unusual containment units, all of them currently empty.  However, by its design and layout.. she was subtly certain that this was one of the locations where beasts had been once contained, either by the residual food or waste left in the room.. or the simple pattern of blood from beasts that struggled against their confinement.  Each confinement unit was individually lit to provide a secluded environment for the select captive, a majority of the light she had seen earlier.

As she proceeded, the other form of light that had caught her attention started to become more predominant, the confinement units ever slightly reflecting the purple that shined from beyond.  Sryine then started neglecting the confinement units, her attention invested completely in the purple light.  A distance further, she finally approached one of the units that was emitting the purple light, this one not being empty.  Within rested a person, sitting with her eyes closed, unmoving, someone Sryine hadn’t seen before.. but who seemed very familiar.  The person within was very intimidating.. in how their body emitted a vibrant purple glow.. not all that unlike Sryine’s own.  Wait, this wasn’t just a simple person, this was an ersatz, one of the many Riyxia had been commanding.  If the ersatz was still containing the flame within it, then it was still linked to Riyxia.  That would also imply Riyxia was actually nearby.  Sryine checked unit after unit, seeing more and more ersatz scattered and contained within, all unmoving.

After what felt like an eternity of units, Sryine suddenly came across one of the units containing a face far more familiar.  Riyxia herself was within this unit, though she too appeared to be unmoving in the same posture as all of the others.  Sryine smashed into the unit, in an attempt to break a way inside.. only to discover that even her augmented strength couldn’t even visibly warp the unit.  She considered the idea of bringing the full might of her flame to bear against it.. but realized that even her success would then potentially endanger the woman inside.  That implied that she had to be more considerate of the way things worked, to think of a more reliable solution.  Of course, the confinement unit was basically just another instrument, she just needed to figure out how to make it work.  Staying calm and rational remained difficult, especially while witnessing her friend trapped inside.  Riyxia’s actual body was brissening with the flame, fully glowing head to toe in a full concentration of the flame, the backpack on her back providing a constant source for her.  This pressure itself actually looked painful, her body having issues containing this much of the flame.. especially while her spectre remained absent.  It wasn’t an idea Sryine had considered before, that the flame could actually be dangerous for Riyxia’s body in the event her spectre wasn’t there to manage it for an extended period.

Finally, she figured out how to manipulate the unit in order to get it open.  Much like any other instrument, all that was required was for her to supply it with her own gift to manipulate it, but it was still designed with a safety process to resist an undesired flow of the gift releasing any captives within by accident.  Sryine then rushed inside to check Riyxia, to make sure Riyxia was alright.  Beyond being completely responsive and otherwise in a daze.. plus the mass excess of flame.. Riyxia appeared to be fine.  Sryine still took the lack of response to be a generic health problem, much like any other failed instrument, so something Vwyx would have to look into.  She made use of her augmented state to pick Riyxia up, to bring her outside in search of Vwyx or anything else that might help.. to then suddenly stop.  Of course, bringing Riyxia’s body wasn’t enough, there was also the spectre to consider as well.  Separating the two would be really dangerous, potentially only making the problem worse.  Now, bringing all thousand or so ersatz wasn’t rational for her, even with her augmentation.  Instead, she would have to identify which one of the many ersatz currently contained Riyxia’s spectre, ensuring both the spectre and body were brought together.  This would leave the rest of the ersatz to unlink from her, which would probably spill their contained flame all over the place in some serious destruction.  It was a problem, certainly, but Sryine currently had more serious things to worry about.  Ieqyisa had told her earlier after all that they didn’t care if she wrecked the place, so she really shouldn’t worry about it either.

This however came with its own all too obvious problem.. she actually had never found any clear way to identify which of many hosts actually contained the spectre.. they had always instead relied on Riyxia to make that evident.  The difference between the spectre and a simple link was seemingly impossible to distinguish, but now she would have to somehow achieve the impossible in order to save her friend.  Things didn’t even end there, she would still have to somehow manage to carry both ersatz from this gigantic room, ascending up out of it through the precarious network of platforms, then she had to find both Vwyx and a way out of here.  The sheer magnitude of responsibility compounding on Sryine brought her to tears, this whole thing being way too much for her.  She still had no idea where Vwyx was.. no idea how to escape this place.. and no idea where the spectre was.  Heck, she wasn’t even certain how easy it would be to carry two people along the unstable platforms without hurting anyone in the process.. the things had problems enduring her own weight alone, and she was actually fairly light in all consideration even despite her tallish height.

Even beyond dealing with the monument of impossibility before her, there was still at least the idea of dealing with the smaller things along the way, things she had more certainty over.  Riyxia was still glowing brightly, the backpack simply making things worse for her.  Sryine meanwhile hadn’t taken the backpack for quite a while now, and even though she was still glowing of her own magnitude, she still felt it would be fair if she took that simple burden up for herself.  Sryine reached out for the backpack, carefully taking it off of Riyxia’s shoulders.. only to find Riyxia moving suddenly, resisting by instinct.  Was she trying to actually deal with the responsibility of the fragment so instinctually, to make sure that her distance from it did not cause problems for others?  It would be foolish, Riyxia currently was without the sheer presence of her spectre, Sryine thun had even more ability to resist the flame than Riyxia did.  This was just another of her responsibilities, it wasn’t even hard compared to the rest of what she had to do.  Presented again with the magnitude of what waited after, Sryine sniffled again.. and Riyxia’s grip tightened.  Wait, wasn’t it then as if Riyxia’s body was instinctively growing tense by empathy of Sryine’s hardship?  Maybe then, if Sryine were to reach out to the emotions of her friend.. maybe then Riyxia would return?

“Stop making me so worried, please!  I know you’re just trying so hard, but you can’t just shoulder everything on your own, and you can’t just expect us to just take it easy.  You can depend on us, I hope you understand that.  Somehow, I’ll figure out how to carry you.. both parts of you.. out of here.  We’ll find Vwyx, we’ll find a way out of here, we’ll make things better again.  Seriously, trust us, please.  You know we can do a ton of stuff together, you can count on us.  The three of us are parts of our own whole too, if you think about it, all of us matter in much the same way you said the parts of each of us do.  However, you’re trying to do everything yourself, and it’s almost broken you.  It is so obvious, you simply can’t take any more, you have to let us shoulder some of this responsibility for you.  Please, stop it, just let it go and let us take care of things from here.”  Sryine’s voice reached out to Riyxia, compelling faint reactions.  However, Sryine was not aware of just how desperately Riyxia was struggling to hold on, to stay in control.. and in that moment of emotion and despair the last vestige of her resistance broke away completely.  Despair fueled feelings of helplessness, a feeling there was nothing she could do.  The compulsion to do nothing then compounded on that helplessness, that it was futile to even try.  The futility turned to frustration, to resentment, to rage, and that rage grew unchecked by the one who had no way to fight back against it.  Riyxia had completely lost control over her rage due to the influence left upon her.

Vwyx was thankfully holding a good course without any apparent mistakes, even with the feelings that had haunted her before having appeared to have left her.  It didn’t fill her with that strange confidence that she was going where she should go, but at least turns with the map were still adding up.  As she turned another corner, spotting a ladder that descended instead of a stairwell, the entire structure suddenly shook with incredible force, like something important had just suddenly exploded.  The whole building suddenly rapidly tilted, confirming for Vwyx that something important had very obviously failed.  Vwyx braced herself for impact as the floating fortress suddenly collided with the ground below, still sending Vwyx slamming against the ceiling.  Many of the lights within the structure started to rapidly fail, clearly from even more damage on impact.  Who knew what else was going to go wrong, especially considering concerns of what might have caused such serious destruction in the first place.  At the consideration of massive destruction, Vwyx began to fear for the worst.

Vwyx dashed down the ladder, finding herself in a massive room with quickly failing lights.  It wasn’t such a serious problem though, the whole room seemed to radiate purple, in addition to a series of spontaneous explosions from the bottom level deeper inside.  Yup, there was no reason to just consider fear that things might reach a bad state, this was blatant confirmation.  The massive room still reflected a cold darkness, but even that was being threatened by the chain of destruction in the distance.  Vwyx however considered how high up she was.. and shrugged.  She really had worse things to worry about, and had just fallen from an effectively much worse height in their crash, there was no time to be worried about a simple fall.  The distance of the fall was dramatically worse than the drop from the observatory, but Vwyx broke the distance with a thunderous crash of her own against the hard floor at the bottom, the actual room very obviously designed to weather incredible crashes.  Vwyx wasn’t even aware, but this particular room had a history of being really good at enduring heavy impacts, it wasn’t even new to being present to world-changing conflicts.  As Vwyx advanced, she was given the opportunity to witness what appeared like a swarm of purple fireflies taking to the air in unison, looking like a starscape spinning within her vision.  Very bad, very bad, very bad, that was so obviously Riyxia.  Vwyx recalled what she had learned from the recording, that Riyxia would be in a docile state until Liyuzhe’s influence set in.  Nothing about this appeared docile, everything about it appeared Riyxia.  Her regret of the moment, beyond being too late, was that she hadn’t found Sryine in the process either.  Dealing with this problem on her own was going to really suck.

“Oh, Vwyx, fancy meeting you here.  Sorry, everything has suddenly gone to hells.. I think Riyxia lost it or something.”  “Sryine!  By the divine, thank goodness you’re here.  All of this is actually Liyuzhe’s fault, tampering with things she has no hopes of controlling.  To think she would sink so low as to try and control her friend.”  “Wait, control?  Did Liyuzhe sing for..”  “Exactly, and we both know just how much control she can actually gain from that against the flame.  Nothing at all, no one gets to keep control.  It’s just like when we were both faced with exposure to our augmentation, and no ability to control it, now we’re going to have to work together to bring her back to her senses instead.”  Sryine considered the quandary Vwyx presented.  Dealing with one of them augmented was insane, Riyxia had struggled to hold on.  Sure, against both of them together it had been a losing battle.. but things weren’t the same anymore.  Riyxia had plenty of extra flame embuing her, still carried the fragment with her for even more power, and had them otherwise outnumbered some odd thousand to two.  She had beaten them by dividing them into a free for all.. but all of these ersatz were Riyxia, she was basically a massive hive mind.  Even together, the odds were heavily stacked against them.

Riyxia snarled, her anger clouding her mind from her will.  Everything stood against her, every ounce of creation opposed her, and all of it would be destroyed.  With an expression of her might, all of the units trying to contain parts of her were torn open.  The very room however attempted to resist falling into destruction, very obviously being designed to resist it.  Its resistance only served to fuel her rage further.  Some of her initial attempts didn’t meet with much direct success, but did accomplish a chain reaction that sowed some delicious destruction beyond just the room, the fortress itself now fallen into ruins.  It would only be the beginning, and it would never be enough, her hunger for destruction would never be satiated.  To that purpose, she started searching for something else to destroy, something she could vent her anger upon.  Some of her eyes spotted that she wasn’t actually alone, there were two other people in this massive room with her.  Destruction would befall them as well, annihilation was only inevitable in her presence, all things in creation would return to the void.

Something subtle within her whispered for her to stop, that these were people to help.  She could sense that they were people who had her own flame of destruction, that idea then only inspired that she could help that destruction grow by unleashing it upon the very vessel that carried it.  An echo of her mind rang in a sense of authority that these were people she needed to slow down, not harm.  Riyxia didn’t like that sound, she hated it, it infuriated her, only encouraging her to defy it even further.  Slow down, don’t hurt.. then she would rapidly send them spiralling into a flurry of agony and death.  They were a part of creation, and thus they needed to be destroyed.  Turning her entire attention upon her prey, the entire collective of ersatz advanced as one.  Her initial casual strikes however missed their mark, the enemy proving to be far too fast for her.. almost as if they could teleport.  Their resistance simply furthered her rage.. if that was the case, she would only need to be even faster.  Applying her gift unto both of her enemies, she decreased their reaction time, reflex time, movement.. sundering every element of speed her enemies carried, destroying it all.  Her enemy attempted to teleport in response, however still being struck before the teleportation applied.. and after it had resolved.  However, her enemy still stood, having endured such an attack.  Resilient, even more than the walls around her, but even more tormenting.  Even so, she would not yield, she still held the advantage here.

As the conflict raged, the flame beset against the flame, the heat of the room began to rise.  The room’s most integral function still worked, its measures detecting the heat rising above tolerable limits as it prepared to respond as it was designed.. to deal with the threat contained within.

EA – Chapter 74

Ancient Maze

Both girls tried to promote what information they could in order to sway things into their favour, but neither Sryine nor Vwyx were having much success in that regard.  Desperation was building in both girls, realizing just how much they were at a loss.

“Wow, Vwyx, come on, work with me here, I thought we had a deal.  Between stuff we already know and stuff I can tell you’re just making up, it’s almost as if you’ve got nothing more to offer.  Come on, I’m trusting you here.  You made me worry you were backing out on us before back at the observatory, don’t make me feel like I’m misplacing my kindness.”  “You jerk, stop being so unreasonable.  Why do your deals always suck so much, like the one you broke with my family.  You’re the one who is so difficult to trust here, I’m just doing my best.”  “Wow, so it’s like that, huh?  Vwyx, you wound me, I really thought I could count on you for something more.  Well, if you’re going to be like that, then I’ll be honest with you, you’re going to be in for a world of hurt.  Poor Riyxia and Sryine are going to suffer so much because of you.  If you’re not going to save them working with me, maybe you had best run off and save them by yourself.”  Fhyernx’s threat was very alarming for Vwyx, bringing her to a defensive stance urgently.  Once she was gone, Fhyernx went into another nearby room and found Ieqyisa waiting for him already.  Ieqyisa hadn’t had much more luck either, but at least the arena was set.  Ieqyisa opened a portal for Fhyernx and herself, Liyuzhe waiting for them both on the other side.

“So I assume both girls have been set into the maze, things going all according to plan.”  “Except for the total lack of useful information, everything is fine.  Both girls really wanted to know more about Riyxia… What exactly became of her anyway?”  “Oh relax, she’s waiting comfortably at the end of the maze for when she is needed.”  Liyuzhe tossed forwards a small wooden talisman onto a nearby metal shelf, one that was very familiar for Ieqyisa.  Ieqyisa picked it up concerned while Liyuzhe went to get some water to deal with a sore throat.  Liyuzhe didn’t feel like using her voice again for a while, and it didn’t help that they had some pretty warm arrangements to look forward too.  Fhyernx passed around some diving gear, a replacement for their power armor that would be fairly useless where they were going.  Ieqyisa had already confirmed that their equipment in the observatory was still waiting in position, it could be warped over the moment they reached their destination.  With a maze like arena such as this, the girls would be far too busy to try to catch up to them, so they wouldn’t need to worry about stuff such as defenses or being followed, they could simply invest their complete attention to the flame.  Liyuzhe pulled out the magnificent void crystal they had just procured with the help of Riyxia’s blood, it was the last thing they had required in order to make their dream a reality.

Sryine ran from hall to hall, seeing very little that distinguished one place from another.  It didn’t take long to figure out either that the design of this place was built to make sure someone inside got lost.  Passing around a corner, she noticed what appeared to be a blossom blowing in the wind, fluttering to the ground.  It had caught her off guard for a moment, the only distinguishing feature of the place, but it seemed to be nothing at all.  That was like something straight out of a storybook tale, following a blossom that tried to take her where she would need to, completely nonsense.  She had tried earlier to use her acceleration too to get around the halls.. only to figure out that she was probably walking in circles and wasting her energy in the process.  At the very least, walking in circles in normal time didn’t drain so much out of her, but it also allowed her to resolve footprints on the ground that she might be able to spot sooner.  When she walked into what honestly looked like an old fashioned laundry room, she fell to the floor in tears.  This place wasn’t just confusing, it was huge, she didn’t have a clue where she was, where anyone else was, or where she was going.

Vwyx was certain that she had just walked into what could have only been a jail block.  Damp dark spaces with chains and shackles littered the dreary environment, expanding into the unlit darkness before her beyond the reach of her glowing arm.  It looked exactly like the best place to keep someone captive, which could very well be exactly where one or both of her friends were being held.  Certainly, nothing about these bindings looked like it could actually contain either of them, but she was really running out of options here.  Still, she could feel such a foreboding presence in the area, like something wanted to tell her she didn’t belong here, not at this hour of the night at least.  Finding the place to be sufficiently abandoned, she decided to take up such advice and find another place to visit instead.. a path that quickly led her into what appeared to be a very rudimentary sleeping quarters.  Vwyx wasn’t one to believe in ghosts, but somehow this place was starting to feel haunted from phantoms of another age.

Sryine eventually found herself in what appeared to be a very old and run-down library, totally devoid of any books too.  It was a shame, a place like this looked like it would deserve a book or two too.  Another blossom fluttered around and fell against one of the bookshelves, foolishly adding itself instead of an actual book.  Sryine sighed and went to clean it up, her hand brushing over a very carefully hidden switch in the process.  A stairwell going down was revealed, leading into a really dirty hall that clearly hadn’t seen people in a long time. The whole thing looked like the raw interior of some kind of instrument, unmoving gears stiff everywhere like time had stopped.  At the other end, on a platform marred by what looked like a series of lightning strikes, sat a single book abandoned to the ages, exactly what she had asked for.  The book was even written in old elvish, a language she actually wasn’t all that good with.  It was a book, but it didn’t seem to be for her, the only label on the cover that made sense being the word “Lwyn”.  Yeah, this was creepy, she didn’t want to have anything to do with it.  Putting the book back where she found it, she fled the room, making sure to seal it back up behind her.

Vwyx continued along the halls, absolutely hating the layout of the place.  Somehow the dark corners of the halls started to seem to glow a faint and dreery red.  It was really feeling like the halls were trying to actually terrify her, like she was supposed to be afraid of the darkness.  She wasn’t, but if things kept up.. that might eventually change.  A faint hiss of the wall sprung beside her, startling her.. but she had just imagined it.  She still regardless threw herself against the opposite wall, uncovering a hidden container of the wall, the unit labeling itself as the fifth of.. something.  Inside, she found what actually appeared to be a map of the whole place, having clearly been forgotten about for quite a long time.  The map was still a challenge to get used to, so it wasn’t exactly perfect.  Worse, she didn’t really know where she might be on the map.  Vwyx took it with her, evaluating things as she went along, trying her best to figure things out.

Sryine was finding everything to be really creepy and haunting.  While trying to stay aware of footprints, she found what seemed to be footprints on the ceiling.. which didn’t even seem logical.  You don’t walk on the ceiling, people stay on the floor.  Eventually, she found a stairwell that went upwards in a sharp spiral.  At the top of the spire, she found a door standing so very obviously important.  Opening the door, she saw an interior that appeared almost blanket in white, hauntingly so.  She slammed the door, then tried to open it again, realizing she was just being silly.  The door however didn’t move, like it was locked and sealed.  Yup, back down the stairs.  She travelled again until she found another stairwell going upwards in another spiral, footprints of a variety looking much like her own heading carefully towards it.  She poked her nose around the corner, finding the entire area ending in a dead end, the path up appearing long removed.  Sryine was quickly coming to the realization that she really didn’t want to be here anymore.

Vwyx was gradually coming to terms with how her map worked, though a lot of it was smudged after being so old.  The whole place was split into twelve different sections, with an expanse that covered all twelve as a series of rings.  The halls and corridors however were so obviously designed to take you exactly where you didn’t want to go, so she still had no idea where she might be according to the map, the map was almost effectively useless.  She walked through a doorway into another dark room.  Wandering around, she followed a passage leading into another room, a faint glint and rumble glaring at her through the darkness caused her to jump in fear again.. until she figured out it was just some sort of convoluted laundry.. thing.  Wow, it made the village look modern.  She really couldn’t believe such a thing had terrified her, one couldn’t be afraid of something as ordinary as laundry.  As she left, she found another set of footprints nearby.. someone else had been here, or had she already done this before?

Sryine came upon a six-way intersection, finding footprints going in all five other directions.  The worst part was, she was certain the most complex intersection she had faced had only been of four-ways.  On the ground, looking like familiar deja-vu, was another one of those floating blossoms, looking to still be exactly where she saw it before.  But wait, didn’t she see it at a four-way intersection?  Looking carefully, she could even see the pair of footprints nearby even had gone towards the blossom, just as she had remembered.  However, if that was true, that would also mean she was almost back where she had started.  Exasperated, she fell to the floor, looking up at the ceiling.. seeing more footprints.  Yup, she was losing it, this place was taking her sanity away from her.  She just laid there for a time, not wanting to move, her blood dripping on the metal floor as she just laid there, still having singed it but leaving no lasting marks.  She felt hopeless, nothing she did would matter, she was just trapped here, alone.  The blossom got caught in another gust of wind and brushed right up beside her leg.

“Ha, you make it seem like I’m not alone.  Oh by the divines, now I’m talking to a blossom like it’s an invisible friend.. I’ve really lost it now.  Fine, if we’re going to sink into madness, might as well go all the way, right?  I should let you know, I’ve been there before.. though it was very different.  Back then, I felt far less in control of myself.. here I’m just helpless about everything else.  I’ve got a couple of friends I’m trying to find, you see, and so it hurts being unable to do anything for them.  I’m really worried one of them might even be in trouble…  What do you think?”  Sryine picked up the blossom using the gift of her own wind and just had it flutter there for a moment, dusting herself off.  Brushing the dust inspired the irrefutable need to sneeze, disrupting her concentration and sending the blossom fluttering off.  She rushed after it as it stuck to a nearby sign, beside an arrow indicating a turn to the right after passing three corridors.. the label for where that went being meaningless.  Oh well, she had no idea where she was going anyway, it’s not like she could do any worse.

Vwyx went up another flight of stairs to yet another level of the entire facility.. after having gone down two flights to get there.  She followed the corridor to a suddenly wide and long stairwell, going up what would be another three floors in the process.  She continued onward, no sign at all where she might be, which is why she had put the map away a long time ago.  However, while everything about the layout was confusing, something was just giving her the feeling that she was in a very central location.. and that she was also near the upper level.  That was a rather specific feeling, not exactly like her, but one she really couldn’t help.  She also had the feeling she was exactly where she needed to be finally.  Of course, that just proved how foolish such feelings were, because there was nothing of importance here.  To fulfill her statement, she looked around, spotting a door suspiciously off to the side.  So, was her feelings an implication that she should see what is on the other side of such doors?  Of course it was.  At this point, if a ghost jumped out and made a weird sound, she wouldn’t be surprised.  Utterly terrified, yes, but not surprised.

Inside the room, she found a large collection of some very unusual screens, not of any design she was used to.  The stupid things didn’t even have the proper connectors for the gift, there was no way to actually power the things.  She poked one of the monitors, which sparked with some faint static electricity, shocking her.  Lightning, in here?  That was strange.  Actually, was it?  Was anything normal?  She looked over the collection, one of the monitors in the back standing out to her.  Of course, she had a feeling she should shake it, makes total sense.  The static charge she had built up earlier discharged when she touched the other monitor, an electrical current sizelling in the process.  A picture formed on the monitor, without any color, the sounds projected were muffled by a static hum.  In the picture, she saw two familiar faces, one sitting in almost a daze, the other carrying a really magnificent looking crystal.. one she strongly felt was black.

“Thank you Riyxia for your cooperation.  I know, right now in your condition, you’re not capable of doing much, but soon you’ll snap right out of it and be ready to do what you need to.  Even so, I’m surprised you walked right into this, not even seeming to be aware.”  The Liyuzhe in the picture waved a tiny object in the air, before putting it back away.  “This is one of our wooden talismans, you see, stuff we’ve had to make a lot of to meet with some of our goals, specifically around the use of beasts.  The whole project required a lot of coordination, you know.  It was my gift that entranced the beasts, made them open to commands and all that, and it was Fhyernx who made the instrument to ensure that control was sustained.  Ieqyisa was important for transportation, her gift for warping around was vital for bringing beasts where we needed to make the whole process work after all.  But even that wouldn’t have been enough.  My gift, after all, really only inspires some compulsion, not absolute blind obedience.  Every beast would have denied such commands, fought against anything that didn’t appeal to its nature, would have made the whole thing impossible.  But we weren’t a team of three back then, as you know, we did have a fourth.  Khyzae had brought us the last piece we needed, some wood that had some really interesting properties.  We only figured out everything recently, but it seemed such properties were even itself caused by the flame too, over exposure having had a long term influence over its state.  The very wood inside faced torment by the flame, a constant despair that made it surrender to the flame eventually, to give up on everything.  Making use of such a fancy property allowed us to project this same impression into a beast wearing the talisman over an extended period, the beast’s will just faded away, making it very susceptible.”  Liyuzhe cleared her throat at that point, her voice seemed to have been hard pressed for some reason, cracking slightly at some of the words near the end.

“Anyway, you really might be familiar with such wood, but you might not remember just how familiar you really are.  Your father really has been a genius of his own right, making you such a realistic body to live in.  So much had gone into that, you know, but of everything that was required, you might forget what Khyzae wrote as being the most interesting.  It seems that having such a vessel that can be influenced by an artificial host needs a lot of elements that make it easy for the host to manipulate.  There is so much wood element in the tissues of the body, so using a certain wood in the process.. it just makes sense, right?  What better way to ensure that the host can manipulate their body than to ensure it was made with wood that made the body easier for it to manipulate?  That sort of makes you also a living walking talisman, of the same sort Khyzae gave to us.  Clearly, there was some shared inspiration going on, right?  But there you have it, that’s why you’re feeling so strange after listening to my singing, after witnessing my gift for yourself.  I’ve actually made use of your own construction to turn such subtle compulsion into what will eventually bring me outright control.  I’m sorry Riyxia, I really am.  I didn’t want to have to force you against your will like this, but you backed me into a corner, I had nothing else I could do.  Don’t worry, I’ll restore you later, after we get back from the vent with our grand prize.  At that point, I would owe you for it, maybe we could all work together on your star project at that point, see about making that happen next?  Really no hard feelings okay?  Anyway, you should get some rest, relax there as you adjust to things and let the control sink in.  When you’re ready, it seems the first thing I’m going to need you to do is to keep the other two occupied and out of our way.  Don’t need to actually hurt them or anything, just make sure they don’t leave, not until I get back, okay?  Thanks.”  Liyuzhe walked off screen at that point, footsteps fading into the distance.  The camera stayed focused on Riyxia for a while after that, although she didn’t move or do anything at all for the entire duration.  Then the screen flickered and the picture went out.

Vwyx had a feeling she had just watched a recording, not a live event.. and she was finding it really annoying that she kept having these very explicit and explanatory feelings.  Beyond any such really strange feelings, there were some very logical facts obvious from what she had just witnessed.  First off, Riyxia had fallen victim to Liyuzhe’s influence, which appeared to be of the extreme quality because of the properties of the wood that she was made from.  Secondly, that there might still be time to do something about it, if she could at all possibly arrive before things actually kicked in.  However, she was still getting a really bad feeling that things were going to get worse than just that at this rate.  She started cursing such feelings until she clued in to a logical explanation for them.

Liyuzhe was trying to control Riyxia, much like she had tried to control beasts in the past.  Vwyx had herself since witnessed just how much Liyuzhe remained in control when a beast was filled with the flame.

EA – Chapter 73

Gigantic Hurdles

Sryine and Vwyx scattered as their area of the beach lit up in a dazzling display of lights and explosions, scattering sand everywhere.  This didn’t exactly answer the question regarding where Riyxia had disappeared to, but it did effectively represent a suitable reason why such a question would have to wait for a safer moment.

Vwyx could tell right away that the sudden appearance of the giant towering instrument could be blamed upon Fhyernx.  The stupid thing looked like it was modeled upon the idea of a giant person.. just with some of the most awkward limbs imaginable.. and an ugly head, really.  Throwing a series of grenades long that sparked in the area near it, revealing the barrier around it, she was also certain that the best way to deal with such a behemoth would then be to wait for it to fire, and then deal with it while the barrier around it went down.  It was a really basic deal, and didn’t take any measure of genius to come up with.  However, when the great thing did fire a salvo of missiles from its shoulder, every projectile instead blinked away in the sudden appearance of a rift, which then resolved not far from both her and Sryine in a series of explosions.  Sryine thus could tell that Ieqyisa was also behind this, making things even more complicated.  There was no sign of Liyuzhe though, even if neither of them were completely aware what sort of signs they would need to look for when it came to Liyuzhe adding performance to a giant siege weapon.

The sudden enormous ambient beam of light that came crashing down upon them from the sky reminded them both that contemplating missing people, including both Riyxia and Liyuzhe, would have to wait until they dealt with the thing before them.  Sryine knew her illusions were completely out of place in this situation, considering instruments don’t dream.  It didn’t matter, her conjuration held such a pristine value to such a situation anyway.. as long as she could figure out an appropriate way to make use of it.  At this distance, it was difficult to figure out anything efficient for the situation.  While in wonder of a decent solution to such a problem, she suddenly found a familiar looking bow and quiver thrown to her feet.  Sryine knew Vwyx would be capable of crafting a few things like that on the fly, and the amount of flame Vwyx had available to her actually served to make the whole project even easier.  It had honestly worked earlier, for the both of them, the application and usage of water and frost had prevented not an ember of the flame from being lost in their battle with the beasts before.  Both of them had a wild scral of purple glow all across their bodies, the flame at a huge saturation in each case.  Sryine smiled wryly at the bow, knowing it was another destructively imbued bow.  This was going to hurt again, wasn’t it?

Sryine pulled back on the bow, a brilliant ambience of lightning gathering with the moment.  She loaded the bow with not just one arrow, but several.. and released.  Thunder roared as the arrows soared.. not in a straight line but in a variety of directions.  The arrows spiraled outwards and then came in towards the towering siege weapon from all directions, connecting at once around it against the barrier in a circle of a circuit.  The barrier repelled the arrow strike itself but the lightning surged its defiance, connecting each point of contact with a circular burst of lightning, putting constant strain on the barrier in the process.  If the barrier was going to try and hold out against anything she would do, then maybe it was best for her to press it to a breaking point.  However, as predicted, the bow successfully managed to injure her again in its usage.  Her blood flared, purple flame flowing down her arm.  Sryine ignored that for now, her focus intent on the lightning she had unleashed.  She had to push to the breaking point, of it or of her.

Vwyx could tell Sryine was struggling to pull this off on her own, this foe was nothing to sneeze at.  Worse was just how much it was taking for Sryine to stay on the offense.. which became a problem once the thing unleashed another shoulder barrage.  Vwyx knew Sryine would suffer if she tried to dodge, either in devoting everything to her focus at the cost of her own wellbeing, or sacrificing her focus to then lose on her assault.  Once again, the projectiles appeared over them, aiming to drop upon them.  Vwyx detonated a small bomb below her simply designed to throw her into the air, a gravity bomb basically aimed upwards.  This was absolutely backwards for her too, not was it the reverse of how a gravity bomb should be used.. it also threw her excessively high into the air.

In truth, she was still afraid of heights, and having come to control over her augmentation just made the traces of that fear harder to ignore.  However, she was determined to be a pavillion of defense, setting her gift upon the projectiles mid-flight.  The projectiles all instantly went dead, falling to the ground harmlessly nearby.  It wasn’t ideal, but she was having problems manipulating such gigantic pieces of ammunition as things were.  Also not ideal was the fact she was at that point falling, the worst part about being so very high up.  It was like realizing the core of such fears, the inevitable consequence of her decision as she flew well above any of the trees.  However, if it was so inevitable, there was little use in being worried.  Vwyx crashed into the sands like a meteor, the injury from the fall causing wounds that ran down her arm in a blaze.  Ah, so that was what it felt like to bleed fire, it didn’t even feel very strange to her.

Sryine took account of the blood upon her arms, so obviously her own.  It was a pure expression of destruction, and if she just ignored it, it would drip upon the sand and incinerate it into more of that black glass.  It might be such a waste.  Taking advantage of her gift again, she applied the blood to another series of arrows, loading another volley.  There were no sparks of lightning this time, instead her very bow glowed with a purple blaze.  She was well aware at this point that her blood, her flame, was a destroyer.  Knowing this, she could think of nothing better to destroy the target before her.  Once again, she released her volley, the lightning of the first strike fading away.  In their place, the next volley struck true, blazing away on impact.  The arrows were in that moment completely incinerated, leaving the blood to scatter across the barrier.  Her blood was thus challenged, to destroy that barrier if it could, it was free to absolutely obliterate it.  The flame craved bringing oblivion, it surged across the barrier, quickly spreading to cover a large portion of it’s upper section still above the water.  Dealing with flame was easy, the siege weapon simply shifted so that water splashed over it.  However, a windy barrier formed in the defense of such blood, protecting the flame as agreed upon.  The barrier started to slowly crinkle, black cracks appearing underneath the flame.  After all, such a barrier was never designed to withstand the onslaught from such a nature of fire.

The siege weapon’s light weapons sparked awake this time, trying to interrupt Sryine’s assault.  An energy weapon, it wasn’t as if Vwyx could do much to adjust such a design in flight like she could with actual projectiles.  While thus distracted, her blood dripped onto the sand, sparking a dramatic shift into more black glass.  Vwyx jumped in surprise, realizing that she wasn’t supposed to do that.  Actually.. was that really such a bad thing, or could it work more in her favour.  Instead of keeping her blood away from the sand, she brought the sand towards her blood, igniting a sheet of sand into a gigantic pane of black glass.  She then manipulated and shaped the glass, mixing it with some of the discarded metal, resulting in an void mirror.  This was all in the instant the energy weapon prepared to fire, giving her time even to raise the mirror above them using pillars of sand to stand shield above them.  The light pierced against the glass… and was consumed.  Vwyx grinned, having successfully dealt with both of its weapons.  Such a grin didn’t last, as one of it’s limbs began to faintly glow a crimson flame of its own.  Wait, it had another weapon?  How exactly did this weapon work?  The water around the siege weapon churned, waves billowing away from it in an ever-growing intensity.  Then without any further warning, the massive thing charged the beachside.

The thing was fast, neither girl was ready to react in time.  The flaming fist connected hard, sending both girls flying with some serious burns.  The injuries bled despite cauterizing conditions, the flames of their blood wouldn’t respond like that anyway.  Their fireproof clothing at least ensured that they didn’t both ingulf on fire, but the flame was at least trying to assert its dominance of their flesh.  Being wounded was also a problem because Riyxia was missing.  But as both girls suffered burns, their own purple flame only grew brighter.  Being harmed by a flame was an insult to the flame, to the people it had come to terms with, had built an agreement with, and had accepted to be a part of its whole.  Even so, flame did nothing to flame, it seemed almost futile.. that is, if the flame wasn’t willing to trust in its own whole.

Augmentation flared through both girls, the flame eager to make an offering to display and assert dominance over such a lesser flame.  Sryine instinctually managed to conjure a massive supply of water upon the flames, a water that pierced right into her and impacted the red flame that was trying to consume her flesh.  The mixture of flame and water in this case did cause a cauterization reaction, sealing up the burn and encouraging her body to heal.  Vwyx meanwhile felt her flame shift, pulling the heat from the burn and leaving nothing but a chill that pierced the very element of the red fire, as if her own flame was betraying the fire element of the red flame by providing an invitation of the frost.  This was not all her flame’s doing, her gift was clouding her body in sand, shifting it into an armor of frost.  Such burns were left in comfort of the soft cool, her body heat self regulating between the cool of her gift and the warmth of her flame.  Smothered between such a formidable alliance, the red flame didn’t stand a chance.

Adorned with armors of water and ice, the two girls confronted the crimson flame before them.  When the giant fist came back for another assault, the two girls came at it with their own.  Sryine smashed into the fist with a gigantic hydrosphere, even larger than the one she had originally conjured on the bridge back in the city.  Vwyx formed a massive hammer.. not of stone, but of pure ice.  Both girls smashed into the red flame, their gifts piercing and overwhelming the flame in the process.  The ice and water pierced through, snuffing out the flame and pushing in deeper, wrecking its thermal engine and building pressure through the entire unit.  The deep freeze made the entire thing buckle, while the water pressure threatened to make it burst.  The siege weapon went totally stiff for a moment, before falling back into the water and shattering in an explosion of pieces.  The water at the surface around the thing froze quickly around it in the process, trapping the weapon in a cage of water and ice as it sunk to the bottom of the lake.

“Oh come on, no.  I go through all that effort to recover it from some stupid swamp, and suddenly I find it sinking back into another.”  “Fhyernx, it’s a lake, not a swamp.”  “Details, it’s still sinking, the stupid thing isn’t even supposed to be able to just sink.”  Fhyernx had showed up from almost nowhere at the lakeside near the woods, Ieqyisa not far from him.  He had fortunately managed to get their power armor back online, but now he had lost his favourite.  “So, looks like we stopped your super weapon too, I guess you’re out of tricks then?”  “Silly girl, don’t overestimate his stupid toy like that, it will just go to his head.  Distractions are just distractions, nothing more.  Though, I would have to admit, I wouldn’t have expected someone of the flame to be suffering so much from some burns, it’s actually disappointing.”  “For having complained so much about being left to wait earlier, you’re sure rather late to the after-party yourself.  Where is Riyxia?”  “Oh come on, do you really expect me to just talk?  Now where’s the fun in that.”  Sryine stepped back from Ieqyisa as the area between them was suddenly lit ablaze in a surge of red flame.  Fhyernx turned his flamethrower next against Vwyx, who didn’t bother dodging.  As Vwyx got closer, the flame simply faded away, white frost decorating the sands as Vwyx travelled.  Ieqyisa stepped in, directing the flow of flame through a gate towards the again unsuspecting Sryine.  Sryine however had figured out what they were dealing with, it wasn’t something she would back away from.  A jet of water returned through the gate, getting right into Fhyernx’s flamethrower.  Fhyernx tried to project another burst of flame.. but only a pitiful supply of water shot forth instead, the flame having been fully replaced.

“For being so attuned to fire.. you both have an uncanny knack for what is most hated by it.  Actually, it almost seems as if you both had suddenly started betraying your own flame.  Apt, apt, really, Liyuzhe will love to hear about this.  But maybe there has been enough time wasted, it would be far better to move on to something more interesting.”  Ieqyisa opened up a gate to provide an open avenue of escape.  As Ieqyisa brought Fhyernx through the gate as well, they discovered Sryine and Vwyx had accelerated through it.  “My my, how unexpected.  Let me guess, now that we’re here, there are two ways we could go about things?  Did I get that part right again, or am I rememberings things wrong from last time?  Don’t worry, things are different now, if you want to go around breaking things, there really isn’t any problem with that.  Please, do take your time.”  Ieqyisa started breaking into snarky sarcasm as she started to walk towards a distant door, Fhyernx heading in a different direction.  As the two of them split apart to try and deal with both people present, Ieqyisa opened up another gate for herself, making it clear that Sryine was the only one capable of following her.  Ieqyisa closed the gate behind her, leaving Vwyx alone with Fhyernx.  Fhyernx stepped through his chosen doorway through into the room beyond, with Vwyx dashing after him.  In the next room though, Fhyernx simply took a seat and looked over his empty workshop, generally sad that everything was actually gone.

Ieqyisa walked around her lab, finding the place to be a lot more disturbing with nothing left inside.  She wasn’t new to moving, it was leaving useless space that bothered her.  Then again, she shouldn’t think of things like that, this relic of a space still had a really good use ahead.  Sryine looked around at her surroundings, getting the uncanny feeling that instead of pursuing an escaping foe that they had otherwise defeated.. that she was instead walking willingly into a trap.  Rather than flee further, Ieqyisa simply started to look around like she was completely relaxed.  Yup, trap, this was definitely a trap.  Sryine turned on her comset and started looking around, trying to get a feeling for any surprise attacks.  Nothing, there was a lot of nothing anywhere.. actually, there was more nothing than she might have expected, the comset wasn’t even capable of getting a reading through the walls for some reason.  Actually on that subject, she really didn’t know where she was.. or where Vwyx was.

“So yeah, if you want to go around breaking stuff, feel right at home.  If you want to have a chat.. I don’t know.. you might possibly convince me that there is anything neat we could talk about, but I’m not exactly certain.”  “You set me up, didn’t you.”  “Well, everything honestly was Liyuzhe’s idea, she didn’t want us to screw up like before.  Really, you got us in a lot of trouble that time, so you would have to excuse me for appreciating turning the tables on you here.”  “So what happened to Riyxia?”  “Oh come on, we just went over how you aren’t in any position to make demands here.”  “Oh really?  So then what’s stopping me from knocking you senseless here?”  “Easy, because you want to know what happened to Riyxia.  Come on, you’re going in circles here, can’t you do any better than that?”  “So.. what kinds of stuff do you want me to talk about?”  “Now we’re being more agreeable, thank you.  So, if you could, is there anything about the astral flame that you know of, anything that we could use that we wouldn’t already know?  Hearing some stories about the astral flame would be really good, because you see it seems the book I used to have on the subject had gone missing, and I so terribly would love to hear a new tale.”  Ieqyisa settled down to relax, interested to hear what sort of information she could get from Sryine in this wonderful opportunity.  Fhyernx was actually doing the exact same thing with Vwyx at the same time, events proceeding in much the same way.  Neither girl really knew what they should do, they had been separated and worked into a corner after all.  Both of them suspected the other was probably facing the same struggle.. but neither had any idea what Riyxia might be dealing with at that time.  If they wanted to get out of this mess, they had to be really careful.

Riyxia however wasn’t finding things to be as difficult at all, in fact she had absolutely nothing to worry about.  She was still together with all of her ersatz, relaxed and waiting for.. something she couldn’t quite remember.

EA – Chapter 72

Lakeside Ripples

The three girls finally arrived at the clearing on the other side of the lake, the sandy beach looking almost a trademark from much of their previous conflicts.  There, they found three others waiting for them, almost dozing off casually as the night’s silence threatened their consciousness.

“Liyuzhe, Fhyernx, snap out of it, they finally showed up.  Sryine, you disappoint me, I really expected you a whole lot sooner.”  “Ah, so I heard.  But really, who could resist the chance to go for a nice night stroll through nostalgia.  Did you know I used to do the same thing frequently in the past?  Come on, don’t tell me you weren’t also enjoying the night.”  Ieqyisa was glaring daggers for Sryine having wasted so much of her time, leaving Sryine feeling even more satisfied than she thought she would be.  Riyxia really did have the best idea, this was a perfect way to start the confrontation.

“See Fhyernx, there wasn’t anything to worry about.  Anyway, if we’re done, let’s get this game started, shall we.”  “Oh right, so is this when you sick your beasts upon us and hound us into another weakened state?  Much like how your augmented beasts had tried earlier?”  “Ah, you’re referring to how much waste was caused by playing all my beasts at once, a field you three had managed to so generously wipe clean with a few easy maneuvers.  Yes, I know, it was very foolish of me, I don’t plan on making the same mistake twice.”  “Ah, so instead, you’re going to carefully place your beasts on the field, maximizing the effectiveness of their presence directly?”  “Exactly.  Games like this care strongly about the numbers, and when you have an armada this large.. carefully making use of each option is important to overall success.”  As to demonstrate the situation, Liyuzhe indicated several beasts that had prowled out from the very lake itself.  Ieqyisa then opened another portal at the other side, which several more beasts came out from in a pincer movement.  Fhyernx called down a transportation vehicle to lift them safely out of the way while the flame ignited in the beasts present.  Of course, the numbers were small, that was because they were being prepared to control the flow of beasts, to call upon precise strikes in a strategic display.

“It was a quote Khyzae was fond of saying.  In a game of minds, a strategic leader never…”  “…plays their entire hand at once.”  Liyuzhe jumped at Riyxia completing the remainder of the quote without warning.  Riyxia’s sly grin also gave her even more reason for concern, but none of that compared to the shock at what occurred when Riyxia indicated behind her.  “Really, you make it sound like you’re the only one here with an armada to worry about, that you are only facing three girls.  Liyuzhe, how very foolish of you to underestimate me so greatly.”  Walking from the woods behind Riyxia blinked a series of eyes stepping forward from the trees, hundreds.. no.. thousands of eyes.  Sryine and Vwyx spun around too in surprise, bearing witness to the woods behind them shimmering in a blanket beyond.  From the shadows of the trees, the first few ersatz stepped forwards, all linked by Riyxia’s spectre.  Riyxia had promised her father she would not walk alone that night as the only ersatz, and she hadn’t.  Continuing to draw upon the flame on her back, the flow of the flame from the fragment running unceasingly, Riyxia commanded far more than her original estimate of 800 dolls.  More so, these weren’t just some simple dolls, every single one of them were life-like creations, designed to be like any other person, and all the elements that included.  Beyond anything else, that included the presence of blood trademark to the gift, even if only artificially imbued.  None of them flowed with their own blood, each case was based upon her own system, like a vent of her own flame.  Containing her essence, containing her will, containing her gift, containing her flame, the foremost among them brought their augmentation to bear and rushed towards the beasts, Riyxia herself stepping back to avoid herself getting involved as well.  In that instant, 8 beasts were unmade by the gift, their flames consumed, leaving Riyxia to get even stronger.

“Blast it Khyzae, that’s not fair.  Hells, why are you always a few steps ahead?”  “I told you, someone has to protect you from yourself.  It really was only fair, after all, you already have an army of your own design, so I decided to bring my own.”  Liyuzhe was furious, directing for several other beasts to be dropped on Riyxia.  Quite literally too, the gates opened above them, the beast however not even surviving to reach the ground as several more ersatz took to the field.  Sryine and Vwyx started wondering why exactly they were even there.  Sryine could finally tell why they really had to walk that entire journey.. it would have been quite a large army to have brought with them otherwise.  Vwyx now understood that the presence she had felt behind them hadn’t just been her imagination, even if hiding the presence of so many ersatz was itself an unreasonable feat.  Actually, why exactly had she not noticed anything sooner?  Riyxia’s spectre was gone from her, she hadn’t had any such trademark shimmer the entire time.  Behind them should have been an unmissable blanket.. but in the faint haze of the existing flame it appears she had failed to notice.  More astounding, her comset had provided no other advantage either, not while she had been so transfixed on the lake instead of her surroundings.  Actually, this incredible use of the flame probably explained why Riyxia’s own comset had so suddenly failed, it had simply overloaded.  Sryine meanwhile could tell just how much strain this much demand of the flame would have put on Riyxia, even with her arm as it was.. the whole thing would have been staggering.

Liyuzhe took a moment to try and cool down, this was not a situation where she could afford to be irrational.  Riyxia was supposed to not be Khyzae.. only the Successor.. but right now it was really hard to figure out what difference that made.  This honestly felt like Liyuzhe was facing off against Khyzae, in all of the greatness and glory that involved.  That was bad, because she had never beaten Khyzae in any sort of competition before.. and there had certainly been several.  Riyxia had numbers, that was one thing she had to take care of.  Additionally, she had to keep Riyxia on her toes, to keep her too busy to keep up.  Liyuzhe still knew of an advantage to this level of.. Khyzae.  Riyxia might have a lot of Khyzae to work with, but she still also had a decided flaw, she still had her own trait of caring too deeply for her friends.  Such a flaw blinded her from Khyzae’s wisdom, made her vulnerable.  It was a flaw she needed to take advantage of.

To that end, several sand beasts lunged out from below the three girls unexpectedly, pulling all three of them into the sand.  A large collection of gates opened at the edge of the woods, the beasts emerging within standing interruption against any reinforcements from the woods.  Such defense though did not last long, even if it was then just as quickly replaced.  Liyuzhe knew she was keeping up with the field, but it was at the cost of her own resources, there wasn’t a single injured ersatz on the field.  Technically too, such dolls were actually expendable.  She wanted the three girls to stay alive, yes, but the army of dolls could fall unto dust for all she cared.  That implied she had a direction to focus the full might of her strength.. such was almost a generous move on Riyxia’s part.

The three beasts under the sands fell, their flame being devoured in the process.  Vwyx realized exactly what she was doing in her process, the alchemical revision of a living creature breaking down the living binds of its blood in a rush of disease and decay.  She was effectively making the thing so sick that it died instantly, from an illness caused by rejecting its own self, much in the same way as a cancerous part.  Effectively, she was forcing another creature to hate itself.  That really sort of stung, but was exactly why she was thankful that the resulting death was immediate, even most likely painless.  There were certainly far worse ways to die.. and since such beasts had been exposed to the flame, it was actually almost a mercy.  Sryine ended the mind of the beast that held her, then rushed to escape the clutches of the sand.  She broke free from the sand.. only to find herself underwater.  She realized alarmingly that she didn’t have a gasp of air to work with, not having expected to have migrated from sand to water.  In a rush, she conjured an air bubble for herself, still shaking in that moment of fear.  Her fear dawned even greater when she realized the others would be facing the same situation.. just without the ability to just create an air bubble for themselves.  A beast however appeared from the waters, attempting to keep her distracted.

To spite Sryine’s circumstances, she activated her acceleration, getting an account for the absence of her friends.  That means she couldn’t just use her acceleration to help her friends before going back to what she was doing, which was annoying.  However, it also would then imply that she was the only one she should be worried about currently in the water at that moment.  Excellent, the lake was her domain alone, that was perfect.  The beast confronting her.. beasts honestly after a review of the lineup being prepared for her, appeared to be quite at home in the water by their aquatic nature.  Several more gates were being made ready to open the moment she went back to a regular flow of time, so nothing here would be done in a single attack.  Liyuzhe did say something about being smart enough to not have such a thing set up for them, didn’t she.  Even so, it was time for her own demonstration of abilities.  Having already taken in more flame, she stopped trying to hide its presence, the water beginning to glow faintly the moment her acceleration ended.  In the next moment, the sky unleashed its wrath.  Lightning surged into the lake, electrifying everything within, the water bubble protecting Sryine making her otherwise exempt from this wrath.  Portals opened, and the lightning resumed.

Vwyx actually wasn’t in any hurry to leave the sand bed, even though she felt she was supposed to be so compelled to such.  Instead, she worked with the sand, reversing it to provide the air she needed to actually explore its depths.  This caught the attention of several other beasts waiting in the sand, having just recently appeared there.  Such beasts were perfectly at home shifting through something as soft as sand, it was no problem for them.  Vwyx however knew she was the one who had the most control of these circumstances, shifting the sand into a pressured case of solid stone, crushing the beast within.  She proceeded deeper into the sand, actually searching for more things to crush along her path, mostly searching for her friends in the meanwhile.  Nothing, only more beasts to crush.  Getting frustrated, she decided to shift the sands wide, creating a massive cavern under the sands, exposing and revealing all of the beasts hiding within.  Her friends weren’t here?  Tearing apart the beasts present revealed yet again more beasts, but at least it was easier when she could actually see what she was doing.  It was dark, yes, but her arms were already glowing enough to provide plenty of light to work with.

Riyxia pulled herself up from the sand, the beast having been ripped apart the moment it had grabbed her, her reflexes being that prepared.  She had another glowing foot though, it was again with the whole feet deal.  However, alarming enough, her friends were nowhere to be found.  They had actually been successfully pulled under the sand.  Riyxia flustered about, wondering what she could do about this situation, when suddenly she collapsed in pain.  One of the Ersatz had been struck with a rift directly, and ripped into pieces as a result.  Soon after, agony poured over her again as another was vaporized with a high density particle cannon.  She then screamed at the third, the agony of experiencing an antimatter implosion that rendered all traces of that ersatz to nothingness was more than just excessive.  Liyuzhe was impressed, this void energy stuff in practical use was really efficient, she was starting to enjoy it.  It was also really compatible with dark elemental properties, especially if such elemental properties were left to negate itself, sort of like a dark matter becoming more like dark energy.  She actually always loved working with the dark elements, so this came naturally to her, even if it didn’t appeal to her own gift.  Fhyernx was just happy to get permission to start using some of his good weapons, stuff classically judged too much for practical use, which was sad because their discovery of the fortress came with so many similarly good ideas.  Ieqyisa however felt it was best to make the most of the progress with her gift that she had dedicated her life to mastering, knowing full well how efficient it is to rip things apart in rifts.  That was how she had broken through many of Khyzae’s traps in the past, and it seemed to remain perfectly viable for this trap as well.

Riyxia realized that she might have actually really overplayed her hand, much in the same mistake as Liyuzhe had before.. by having provided a large number of opportune targets for Liyuzhe to work with.  Being connected to every ersatz, she felt the agony of every single loss, and that provided her with a vulnerability.  Remaining focused as her ersatz fell started to become more and more challenging too, hampering the abilities of her own mind and body.  It did not help that she also remained concerned about the wellbeing of her friends.. effectively her sisters.  This overall combination left her without any room with which to react.  However, at that moment, the ground began to shake, and the air echoed with thunder, like ripples of encouragement that shook through her.  Riyxia wasn’t being given the room to think, she wasn’t left with much of such luxuries at all, instead she would need to act.. to turn everything back around to her own advantage.  The only thing she could depend on was her rage.  Riyxia committed to it, soaking into it.  Every loss then only furthered to deepen her fury.  A few more ersatz fell, and a frost started to develop over the backpack, the draw of the flame being far too extreme.  Her flame hungered in her fury, and she unleashed upon every beast in sight, devouring their very essence in the process.  Now it wasn’t just a leg, her arms had begun to glow too.  A little while later, the traces of flame spread to her face, her very eyes glowing purple in the night sky.  With that, she howled like a feral animal, a predator hungry for more prey.

The sound from such a howl pierced through sand and water, being audible far beyond, as all of the other ersatz howled in kind.  It was as if Riyxia was a beast herself, a pack leader of an ersatz pack, but in that the greatest of all beasts.  Fhyernx raised his weapon to attempt another shot on an ersatz, only to find himself torn from the air and the helm of his suit planted into the dirt.  Wait, what had happened to the barrier, why wasn’t he protected?  He looked over his instruments, all of which had suddenly been overloaded, unable to defend against the ferocious might of the flame.  Ieqyisa frantically warped a distance away to avoid being victim of the same, only to find her destination as safe as her point of origin.  She tried to stand after the landing, but her suit was completely unresponsive.  She warped out of it in time to witness Liyuzhe being sent crashing into the dirt for her own turn.  Fhyernx realized that his equipment was all unusable, even though he could just replace things in an instant.  However, none of the others could do that.  Ieqyisa could still defend herself with her gift, but that didn’t actually leave her with many options while facing Riyxia.  Worst of all, Liyuzhe.. had even less to work with.  He stumbled free from his wreckage, only to find himself instantly surrounded by ersatz.  He responded by calling up another weapon, only to find Riyxia pouncing on him again and destroying that too.  Ieqyisa tried to defend herself from such an armada with her gift, but she had no opening, she couldn’t use her rifts in close quarters, and the ersatz were very good at hand to hand combat.

“Ieqyisa, we need an exit, now.  Get us out of here.”  Liyuzhe hadn’t wanted to resort to such drastic measures, but there wasn’t any other choice.  It seems she might have to resort to using her trump card after all.  Ieqyisa first gathered up the three of them together in an open location, then pondered a suitable destination.  “Just bring us up there, there isn’t anything else to do about it.  In fact, leave the gate open, we should welcome those who follow.  Fhyernx, we need to provide those left behind some extra difficulties, so I’m authorizing you to send out your personal favourite.  Simple beasts aren’t cutting it, we’re going to need something even more fierce.”  Liyuzhe knew there was a good chance things would come to this, that she would be expected to go this far, but she really didn’t want to resort to such drastic measures.  Stepping through the portal along with her other friends, she waited to receive the guests that were quick to follow.  Riyxia erupted through the gate, followed by a flow of ersatz close behind her.  After checking that her two companions were gone, Liyuzhe stepped forward to confront Riyxia directly.

After hearing the howls from earlier, Vwyx and Sryine both raced back up to the surface.  By the time they arrived, they found everything had gone very suddenly quiet.  A quick search around had them quickly find the other, but there wasn’t a single beast to be found otherwise.  Additionally, there wasn’t even a single person to be found, not even any of the stray ersatz.  The silence then was gradually broken by a faint whirl and a pop, quickly evolving to a gushing roar, as the lake erupted by the crash of something massive.  The two rushed over to the lake to inquire upon what had just happened, just as a towering monstrosity woke from beneath the waters.  Metal creaked behind the faint glow of a gigantic barrier of a weapon recovered from another era, a faint hiss erupting as its systems prepared for combat.

Neither of them were familiar with the giant mechanical siege engine that Fhyernx had recovered from the dawn of the instrumentation era.  The people of that time had taken to calling it as a Colossal, an apt description at least of its foreboding presence.
